The Board Meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up and knocked into

the table, spilling his coffee over his notes. "How embarrassing! I am getting so

clumsy in my old age."

Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most

embarrassing moments. It came around to Frank who sat quietly listening to the

others. Someone said, "Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment."

Frank laughed and began to tell us of his childhood. "I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad

was a fisherman, and he loved the a. He had his own boat, but it was hard making

a living on the a. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to

feed the family. Not just enough for our family, but also for his Mom and Dad and the

other kids that were still at home."

He looked at us and said, "I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and

he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the as for his catch. When you got

clo to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather

coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No

matter how much my mother washed them, they would still smell of the a and of

fish."

Frank's voice dropped a bit. "When the weather was bad he would drive me to

school. He had this old truck that he ud in his fishing business. That truck was older

than he was. It would wheeze and rattle down the road. You could hear it coming for

blocks. As he would drive toward the school, I would shrink (畏缩) down into the

at hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck

would belch (喷出) a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it emed

like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over and

give me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a good boy. It was so embarrassing

for me. Here, I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me

goodbye!"

He paud and then went on, "I remember the day I decided I was too old for a

goodbye kiss." When we got to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual big

smile. He started to lean toward me, but I put my hand up and said, "No, Dad." It was

the first time I had ever talked to him that way, and he had this surprid look on his

face. I said, "Dad, I'm too old for a goodbye kiss. I'm too old for any kind of kiss." My

Dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. Then he

turned and looked out the windshield. "You're right," he said. "You are a big boy… a

man. I won't kiss you anymore."

Frank got a funny look on his face, and the tears began to well up in his eyes, as he

spoke. "It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to a and never came back. It

was a day when most of the fleet (船队) stayed in, but not Dad. He had a big family

to feed. They found his boat adrift with its nets half in and half out. He must have

gotten into a strong wind and was trying to save the nets and the floats."

I looked at Frank and saw that tears were running down his cheeks. Frank spoke

again. "Guys, you don't know what I would give to have my Dad give me just one

more kiss on the cheek… to feel his rough old face… to smell the ocean on him… to

feel his arm around my neck. I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I

A Dutch artist and environmentalist has brought a project that shows how tiny smog

particles (雾霾颗粒) can be made into jewellery like rings to China.

Dann Roogaarde is attempting to rai public awareness of cleaning the air. He has

made a Smog Free Tower, which began to operate in September, 2015, in Rotterdam,

the Netherlands, and he brought it to China in September, 2016. The pollutants are

collected from the 7-meter-high tower before being procesd and condend into

cubes (压缩成立方体) measuring 4 mm to 5 mm. The cubes, which can be ud to

make rings, are not for sale but have been prented as gifts to supporters at

Kickstarter, a large crowdfunding site where Roogaarde collected more than

110,000 euros for his tower project.

"I bring the project to China becau Beijing is where I got the inspiration," he said.

He said he visited the city years ago and saw the huge difference in environmental

conditions on good days and smoggy days, which gave him the inspiration for the

project.

"But it is more than just cleaning the air. I hope the project develops public

awareness of environmental protection." He said his tower project would travel

around the world, visiting cities such as Paris, Los Angeles and Mexico City.

Roogaarde said his tower would suck in (吸入) polluted air like a huge vacuum

cleaner, before removing the pollutant particles and returning clean air. "It has

performed well in reducing air pollutants by 75 to 80 percent in a surrounding area,"

Roogaarde said.

Liu Guozheng, cretary-general of the China Forum of Environmental journalists,

I met Mrs. Sa in my nior year of high school. I was struggling greatly in her math

class. On top of always struggling with math, I was dealing with the anxiety that came

with being a foster youth and worrying deeply about the future that lay in store for

me. I had been living with my foster parents (养父母), and our agreement was that

after graduation I was to move out and begin my life as an adult to support mylf, at

venteen.

What accompanied the burden of the anxiety was a lack of motivation in school.

Most teachers didn't notice me. Mrs. Sa, however, took a clor look. I will never

forget the first time she walked over to my desk and handed me a little folded note.

It read, "Are you okay "

I was shocked by her genuine care and interest in my well-being. Not only was she

nsitive enough to notice my rerve, but she also took the time to personally make

a difference. She listened as I shared my most hidden fears about my past and the

uncertain future that was closing in on me. She listened when others emed to be

too busy to show concern. And she agreed to write a letter of recommendation for

me when I decided to apply for the Guardian Scholars Program, a program

committed to helping ambitious, college-bound students exit the foster care system.

I found new ambition through Mrs. Sa's support and devotion to my academic and

personal success. Gradually, not only did my grades improve, but my confidence also

improved.

The most amazing thing about Mrs. Sa was that I was just one of an army of

students who would confess that Mrs. Sa had changed their lives. Her entire

classroom was filled with letters of utmost appreciation for her and the life-changing

impact she had had on so many students.

Once, Mrs. Sa was in hospital for a week, during which we students visited her in

turns and tried our best to do something for her becau in our mind Mrs. Sa was

an angel who spread her wings far and wide.

(1) What was the agreement between the author and his foster parents (no more

than 10 words)

(2) How did the agreement affect the author (no more than 12 words)

(4) How do you understand the underlined part in the last paragraph (no more than

When I was a kid, there was only one way my parents would let me stay home from

school and that was if I had a high fever. Most of my friends could stay home due to a

stomachache or a mild fever—but I had to be dying in order to stay home.

By the way, my parents are both doctors. My parents ud to say that they were

teaching me how to have a good work ethic (职业道德). I didn't understand the

connection until last week.

The other day I was on the train and sat behind a young man who was complaining

to his friend about his life. He went on for twenty minutes about how his passion in

life was to make movies, but he would't pursue it becau he had no clue if he could

make enough money and he didn't want to waste time becau it would take years

to make it big. He then admitted to thinking about buying stocks by borrowing

money becau he thought he could easily make six figures within one year. His

friend agreed with him and said, "The stock is good becau you can make tons of

money and only work for a short time."

I think they were indulging (沉溺) in the wildest fantasy. Many people the days

don't realize that when things em to happen immediately, it is only becau a lot of

effort, determination and time have gone into them and it isn't due to some

miraculous (不可思议的) event. The easier it looks, the more hours go into it. There

is no excu for laziness.

Looking at the two young men, all of a sudden I was having a flashback of being ten

years old and watching the television show Fame.

In the show the dance teacher told her students, "If you want fame, fame costs and

here's how you start paying in sweat." Every time we watched that show, my

dad would proudly say how right the teacher was becau in order to succeed you

have to work hard.

(1) When did the author's parents allow her to stay home from school (No more than

10 words)

(2) Why did the young man on the train give up his dream of making movies (No

more than 15 words)
