Baron Pierre de Coubertin was a Frenchman. At his time sports were not

When you cough or sneeze(打喷嚏), plea turn your head away from others

and cover your mouth with the full part of your hand. Afterwards, you should

say, “Excu me.” This is a rule I t for my students. It is so simple, but many

kids have never been told to do this. In fact, I noticed adults cough and sneeze

in public without putting a hand over the mouth. I hate traveling by subway in

New York during cold and flu ason, becau it is certain that someone is going to stand right behind me and cough or sneeze on my neck.

One important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough

on their hand, they should wash their hands as soon as possible. Otherwi,

they will be passing tho germs(细菌) along to everything and everyone they

touch. In order to help the kids remember this rule, I tell them about an old

story. It says that when you sneeze, evil spirits jump into your body. If you

don’t cover your mouth, the spirits will enter, but if you cover your mouth, you

will keep them out. We say “God bless you” when someone sneezes, and in

Germany you should say “Gesundheit.” That means “Good health to you.” Both

expressions are said—just in ca you didn’t cover your mouth in time and the

spirits were able to enter your body. The kids love finding out the origins(起源)

of the expressions and it encourages them to put advice to u more often.

Youth, friendship and love are the main themes of this year’s Chine movies,

such as So Young(《致青春》) and American Dreams in China(《中国合伙人》).

Tiny Times(《小时代》), one of the most popular movies this summer, also has

the same features.

The movie was bad on author and director Guo Jingming’s novel of the

same name. It tells a story about four girls who come from different

backgrounds and of different personalities. Since it was shown on June 27,

Tiny Times has made 483 million yuan at the box office. The quel(续集) of it

was shown on Aug 8 and it has also been a big box office hit.

Cao Yuhan, 13, a high school student at Beijing Jianhua Experimental School, is

a big fan of the movie. “I’m deeply touched by their friendship,” Cao said.

“When Nan Xiwang is in trouble, the other three girls try their best to help her,

even running barefoot in the snow. However, not everyone has had good

things to say. The people’s Daily said that the film went too far in encouraging

youths to become materialistic(物质至上主义的). Film commentator Raymond

Zhou wrote on his online blog that “Buying luxury goods ems as a way to

express love or friendship, and the word ‘money’ is repeated over and over

again. Song Kexin, 14, a high school student at Zhida Middle School in Taiyuan,

Shanxi, shows a typical example of a fan’s attitude(态度). And that’s to look for

the positive value. “That movie is a little far from our daily life. My friends and I are not having parties every day,” Song said, “But I admire Tang Wanru’s

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be clo and

real, yet disappear soon. They don’t feel hurt. If the same two people meet

again, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult

for us Chine to understand .Friendships between us develop more slowly

but may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)deeply into both families.

There is another difficult point for us to understand. Although Americans treat

friends warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their

politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in

the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take a day off from our work

to act as guides to our friends. It is opposite in America. Americans cannot

manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans.

They will probably expect the visitors to get themlves from the airport to the

hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the

visitors arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.

For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their

homes than to restaurants, except for business matters. Americans are ready

to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home

life. So accept their hospitality(好客)at home and enjoy your visit in America!

When visiting Beijing, the Palace Muum is a must-e for many people.

Last year, the muum received 14.2 million visitors, which is twice the number of visitors in 2002. This year it is expected to increa by 10 percent.

Compared with other popular muums around the world, the number of

visitors at the Palace Muum is very high. Last year the Louvre(罗浮宫) in

Paris welcomed 8.8 million visitors and the British Muum in London received

5.8 million.

A large number of visitors can bring a lot of money from ticket sales. But there

are also worries that people will do demage(破坏) to relics(文物) and old

buildings.

To solve the problem, some people suggested taking cultural objects out of

the Palace Muum. In this way, visitors coming for ancient buildings and

cultural objects will go to different places. “It is a sign of progress. Letting

more people e the treasures is more important than keeping them in their

original(原始的) place,” said Song Xiangguang, a professor at Peking

University.

However, Shan Jixiang, director of the Palace Muum, doesn’t agree on this

idea. He thinks that the most important thing in protecting the Palace

Muum is to keep it complete. “The 1.8 million cultural relics and the

historical buildings are two key parts of the muum. They can’t be parated.”

he said.

Shan said that they are planning to increa the space that is open to the

public. This will not only feed visitors’ curiosity(好奇), but also spread them out

so they are not putting too much pressure on one area. Shan also wanted to t up an appointment system. “ If visitors make an

appointment before they come, we can make better and different visiting

routes(路线) for them.” Shan said.

It was an exciting moment for Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, a retired married

couple from Harbin, China. It was also a great moment for China becau it

was the country’s first gold medal in the pairs figure(花样)skating competition

at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Everyone was very quiet when Shen and Zhao were skating onto the ice. They

were expecting something wonderful to happen. As soon as the music started,

Shen and Zhao skated around the field quickly with beautiful style; every move

and Zhao won the Olympic gold medal.

In China, winter sports are not as popular as they are in America and Northern

European countries. So China nt only 90 athletes to Vancouver to take in a

few, carefully chon sports. Such a good decision also led to Wang Meng and

Zhao Yang winning gold medals in the little known, but exciting sports of

short track (轨道) speed skating.

China did not win a lot of medals at the Winter Games. Most of the events

are still very new to China and need to be developed. But Chine athletes

learn very quickly. For example, China’s women’s curling team(冰壶队) only began in 2003, but they were No. 1 at the 2009 World Women’s Curling

When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English

ntence, word for word, into your own language. Take the ntence“How do

you do? ” for example, if you look up each word in the dictionary, once at a

time, what is your translation(翻译)? It must be a wrong ntence in your own

language.

Languages don’t just have different sounds, they are different in many ways.

It’s important to master(掌握) the rules for word order in the study of English,

too. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener can’t understand

the speaker’s ntence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an

English ntence is changed, the meaning of the ntence changes. But

sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the ntence doesn’t change.

Let’s e the difference between the two pairs of ntences.

“She only likes apples. ” “Only she likes apples. ”

“I have en the film already. ” “I have already en the film. ”

When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit of the

language and u it as the English speaker does.

Oil can be ud in many ways and it's difficult to imagine what the modern

world will be like without oil.

But oil isn't easy to find and get out of the earth. Men must study the rocks.

When they think the rocks in a

be a terrible fire. So a kind of

cover is fixed on the top of the pipe, and the oil can run out through taps.

If we make a well near the middle of the oil field, we can also get gas. Such

gas is nt through pipes to
