1)Henry Fairlie (1924— ) a contributing editor (特约编辑) to the New Republic (新共和

国) as well as a contributor (撰稿人) to other journals. His works: The Kennedy Promi

(肯尼迪诺言), the Life of Politics (政治的生命), the Spoiled Child of the Western World

(西方世界宠坏的孩子).

2)The Pub: public hou or a local

Besides offering different kinds of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and providing hot

and cold food, it rves as a place for meeting friends and for entertainment. For instance,

many pubs have TV ts, amument machines and juke-boxes (投币式自动电唱机) and

provide facilities for playing darts(投镖), billiards(台球), dominoes(西洋骨牌) and

similar games. Some also employ musicians for evening entertainment, such as piano

playing, folk singing and modern jazz.

phra derives from the superstition that it was unlucky to t the left foot on the ground

first on getting out of the bed.)

8) delve into: investigate… for information, make rearch into… 钻研,深入研究

e.g. In order to find out how man came into being,

he ~ed for information into old books.

9) Jupiter: the planet Jupiter(木星) and the information about it gathered by a U.S. space

probe(探测飞船)

10) all at once: suddenly, at the same time (突然,同时)

11) make / offer resistance to: opposing, using force against in order to prevent the

advance of… 抵抗,对抗,

e.g. They were defeated becau they made no ~ to the enemy’s advance. 他们失败了
