二、审题训练
Adventure with Cuckoo
Not far from our hou in Texas was thick woodland. There I spent much of my time. I was an
animal-lover, eager to watch-and capture, if possible- the interesting creatures that lived there.
Walking one afternoon in the depths of the woodland, I came upon a hug hollow log (空的原木), I look curiously into it, and to my excitement, there was the figure of a cuckoo(杜鹃鸟). It was
probably a mother bird sitting on her eggs. Eagerly I dragged two large stones to one end of the log
and clod the opening there.
If I wanted the bird, I would have to go get her. The log was almost twenty feet long. Could I
get through it? Would the cuckoo peck(啄) at me?
In spite of my fears, I started in. I inched forward with my arms stretched out in front of me and
1
my toes digging into the earth. My face was presd against the wet wood. I could not bring my arms
back, becau there was not enough room.
Suddenly I realized that the cuckoo and I were not the only things in the hollow log. I trembled.
What was this soft thing my hand felt? It was the nest of white-footed mice! The bright-eyed little
creatures bounced for the darkest place they could find in a panic. They raced over my back, under
my shirt, about my neck. One of them crawled between my body and the wood! I gave a wild shrug.
Many other creatures, like incts were on the run for a safe place. Poor harmless little creatures!
How guilty I was to have disturbed their life.
Suddenly I saw the mother cuckoo stood up, hisd(斯叫), and coughed. I wished that I hadn’t
covered up the other end of the log. I drove off the great bird. She hisd forward painfully.
I was face to face with a lovely newborn baby cuckoo. It was downy white, with gray legs and
naked head. Breathing quietly, it rested in the nest.
