Unit 6 Life in the Arctic

一、引入话题

（播放关于北极的视频）

Lily: Welcome to our class, I’m Lily.

Lu: I’m Lu.

Lily: Today let’s go to a white world--- the Arctic北极。

Lu: 北极是指北纬66度34分（北极圈）以北的广大区域，也叫做北极地区。

Lily: In the Arctic, there’re lots of lovely animals and people.

Lu: In this unit, we’ll talk about their life there.

二、学习内容

Lily: Do you want to know something about the Arctic?

Lu: Well, 在本单元我们将要学习一首关于北极熊的儿歌---The polar bear, 一篇

关于北极人类生活的课文，一篇关于北极动物生活的课文---Animals of the

Arctic，以及一个关于北极生活的故事---Nicola’s holidays.

三、学习要求

Lily: When we finish this unit, we can understand:

Northern Canada. Most of the year it’s very cold here. In winter it’s always dark. In summer

it’s never dark. This is my father on his snowmobile. Build an igloo. Inside an igloo. Their fur

live in groups. They make tunnels under the snow. They can hide in the tunnels. Snowy owls

hunt in the daytime. They also hunt birds. Do you like it here? There are no shopping malls.

We’re going to the shopping mall. Tomorrow I’ll show you my TV. Wasn’t it boring?

People’s life:

Lily: The Arctic is really a cold place.

Lu: You are right. Most of the year it’s very cold there. 一年的大部分时间那里都

很冷。最暖和的时候平均气温只有零下8度, 最冷的时候气温达到零下50多度。

Lily: And I think the Arctic is a special place, too.

Lu: 为什么你认为北极是个特别的地方呢？

Lily: Becau in winter it’s always dark. In summer it’s never dark.

Lu: 你说的是北极的极昼极夜现象。的确，北极的冬天是漫长、寒冷而黑暗的，

从每年的11月23日开始有接近半年时间将是完全看不见太阳的日子。

Lily：Terrible! How can the people live there? 在北极人们如何生活呢？

Lu：They are strong and brave. 居住在北极的爱斯基摩人是从亚洲经两次迁

徙进入北极地区的。他们无疑是最强悍、最勇敢和最坚忍不拔的民族。

Lily：我还知道爱斯基摩是一个民族，不同地区的爱斯基摩人对自己有不同

的称呼。比如：美国阿拉斯加地区的爱斯基摩人称自己为“因纽皮特人”，加

拿大的爱斯基摩人称自己为“因纽特人”，格陵兰岛的爱斯基摩人称自己为

“卡拉特里特”，意思都是“人”。爱斯基摩人认为“人”是生命王国里至高无上

的代表。

Lily：Oh, it’s so interesting. In the text Howard is from Gri Fjord in northern

Canada. 课文里Howard就是住在加拿大北部的格里兹峡湾，那里是加拿大

最北端的因纽特人聚居区。And I know that they can u snowmobile and build

an igloo in the Arctic.

Lu：You’re right. Snowmobile是雪橇。爱斯基摩人赖以生存的大多数动物每

年至少要迁移两次，因而注定他们跟随食物源过着迁移的生活。爱斯基摩

人迁移主要是靠双脚徒步旅行。冬季他们使用狗拉雪橇，夏季由于冰雪融

化，雪橇无法使用，只能让狗驼一些东西。

Lily：What about the igloo?

Lu: Igloo是雪屋。其实爱斯基摩人将所有的房子都称为igloo。提起爱斯基

摩人就联想到他们住在雪屋中，其实这也是非常片面的。实际上只有3/4的

爱斯基摩人都没有见过这种雪屋，常年住在雪屋的只是极地爱斯基摩人。

雪屋的建筑材料就是一条条长方形的大雪块，先将雪块交错堆垒成小屋，

再在雪块之间浇水，很快便冻成一体，密不透风。绝对称得上是无污染建

筑。

Lily: Oh, so cool, I like the life in the Arctic.

Animals of the Arctic:

Lu: In the Arctic there’re also lots of animals. Such as: the polar bear, the arctic fox,

the arctic hare, the snowy owl, the lemming, the al…（PPT---图片）

Lily: 是啊，在北极有许多可爱的动物，北极熊、北极狐、北极兔、雪鹰、旅鼠、

海豹„„

Lu: You know the king of the Arctic is the polar bear, he is a really big guy. About 3

metres, 650 kilos. （PPT---图片）

Lily: 北极动物之王---北极熊真的是个大家伙，它们大约有3米高，650千克重。

Lu：Oh, my! So they need to eat more. Their favourite food is als, and they also

hunt the arctic hare.

Lu：别看北极熊体积庞大，但是他们能灵活地捕捉海豹和北极兔呢！

Lily：Do you remember the lovely polar bear in the chant? 还记得儿歌里那只可爱

的北极熊吗？

Lu：Yeah, he wants to catch a hare. 他想去捉一只北极兔。

Lily：What does he do?

Lu: He jumps in the water, swims across the lake, walks through the snow, and he

runs up the hill. (PPT---图片讲解)

Lily: Can he catch the hare in the end?

Lu: Hehe, he comes to a top, he comes to a stop, he looks around, what’s not there?

Lily: The hare, the arctic hare. Oh, a poor polar bear!

Lu: The polar bear’s fur is white, why not black or brown?

Lily: The Arctic is a white world, the snow is white, so they can hide when they hunt,

the other animals cannot e them.

Lu: 许多动物和北极熊一样都有保护色，有的动物还能随着环境的变化改变自己

身体的颜色，能很好的保护自己，比如：变色龙、蛇。

Lily: 据我所知，北极兔也会随着季节的变化改变皮毛的颜色呢！

Lu：The polar bear is the big one in the arctic. The arctic fox is the beautiful animal

there. 北极狐有着美丽的白色的皮毛，they have beautiful white fur.

Lily: And in winter they live in groups. They make tunnels under the snow.（PPT---图

片讲解live in groups, tunnel）

Lu: 在北极有一些动物和北极狐一样都是群居生活的,比如: reindeer（北极驯鹿）

等。也有一些北极动物和北极狐一样能在雪下打一个地道，在温暖的地道里过冬，

比如：the al, the arctic hare。

Lily: There are some kinds of birds in the Arctic. Snowy owls is one of them.

Lu: 在北极除了陆地和海里的动物也有一些鸟类，雪鹰就是其中的一种。它们会

在白天捕猎，和北极狐一样它们最喜欢的食物是旅鼠。

Lily：The animals in the Arctic are unique, I love them.

Lu: I think so!

Nicola’s holidays:

Lu: Do you want to go to the Arctic?

Lily: Of cour I want, but I have no chance.

Lu: Our friend Nicola is so lucky, she can go there for her holidays.

Lily: Nicola很幸运，她可以去北极度过她的假期，因为她的爷爷奶奶就住在那

儿。Does she like the Arctic?

Lu: At first, she doesn’t like there, she thinks it’s boring.

Lily: Boring? Why?

Lu: She said: “ There’re no shopping malls, no playgrounds and there’s no TV.”(PPT

讲解there be的用法)

Lily: 是有些无趣，没有购物中心，没有操场，甚至没有电视，I think so! And then?

Lu: 接下来的几天granddad给Nicola安排了丰富多彩的活动。他们去钓鱼go

fishing，建造拱形圆顶小屋build an igloo，观察北极熊watch the polar bears。

Lily: I am sure she is happy.

Lu: Bingo! Nicola 玩得很开心，she said: This is great fun. 这真是太好玩了！这真

是太有趣了！

Lily: Oh, she likes the Arctic. 愉快的寒假生活让Nicola 流连忘返。临别时她还问：

Can I come again next year? 明年我能再来吗？

Lu: Her grandma asked: “ Wasn’t it boring?” 奶奶问她：“你不是觉得很无聊吗？”

Nicola answered: “ Yes, very boring!”

Lily: So strange! Nicola 为什么回答 Very boring!呢？她不喜欢她的假期吗？

Lu：Hehe，she is so humor. Nicola是在开玩笑呢！

Lily：Oh, I e. Nicola had interesting holidays!
