It’s hard to avoid looking like a fool on April Fool’s Day. On April 1 each year, people play tricks on
each other. The tricks are usually silly rather than mean. Classmates sometimes tie each other’s
shoelaces to their chairs. Teachers might hand out an impossibly difficult surpri test that scares
students before they reali it’s only a joke. Newspapers announce fake contests (such as “Win an
elephant!”) and report on fake stories (like “UFO” lands in New York City).
Forget gifts, songs and special foods-tho are for the other holidays of the year. On April Fool’s
Day, the only tradition is to laugh (and maybe to cau a little bit of trouble).
One April Fool’s Day, when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very
clever and funny trick on the teachers. They bought some chickens and t them free in our
school cafeteria. The chickens ran all round the school, in and out of classrooms and under our
feet. Feathers were flying everywhere.
Teachers began running after the chickens, trying to catch them. Finally, they caught four of them.
But the chickens were wearing numbered tags around their necks, and the teachers discovered
that they had only caught chickens NO. 1, 2, 3, and 5. Where was chicken No. 4?
The teachers looked and looked. They couldn’t find another chicken. After a few hours, they
realid that the students had played another joke on them: There were only four chickens in the
first place! They’d been tricked by the numbers on the chickens.
It’s been a long time since I was in high school, but that April Fool’s Day remains one of my
favourite memories from tho years.

2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.

The England’s theater developed rapidly in the years following the defeat of the Spanish Navy.
The dominant feature of Elizabethan theater was the stage, It has three parts: The fore stage for

play. Very little scenery was ud, so the actors had to create a scene through their voices and

Very old people do rai moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them.
Their values — this can’t be repeated too often — are not necessarily our values. Physical

be taken better care of. Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in
danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where rious risks are being
taken with the health and safety of the old.
Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical
maintenance () as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to

however good the results will be. And at what point should you stop to treat the old body? Is it
morally right to try to push off death by eking the development of drugs to excite the forgetful

Knowing how to communicate well needs very personal attention between you and another
person, we should face it. Is there a better way to learn how to communicate successfully? Yes,
there is. Plea follow the basic steps below.
Relax and breathe.
Whether it’s a business meeting or a first date, the first thing you must do in order to
communicate is to relax.
When you relax, you are in control. You control your reactions() and your reactions do not
反应
control you. Breathing is central to relaxation. Take a few deep breaths and your body will begin
to be more relaxed. This will help you apply what you have already known about how to
communicate well.
Think and you will be prepared.
Have you heard the old saying “Think before you speak.”? Well, it is true. By thinking ahead about
how the conversation might flow(), you will be better prepared, more relaxed and more
流畅
confident.
Follow the flow of the conversation.
If you are uncomfortable, being silent will only make it wor and make the other person
uncomfortable as well. So when all el fails, you should follow through with small talk until a
common topic appears.
A good way to keep a conversation going is to ask the other person questions. People love to talk
about themlves and if you do this, they will keep the conversation going, thinking very highly of
you. Learning good communication skills is not something out of reach. If you make an effort, you
will succeed.

The Boy Made It!
One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early
afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to
e far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He
didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body

Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in
the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himlf, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream
so that his body wouldn’t lo too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last,
Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled() in his cave and slept.

tracks and returned to the snow cave, becau without shelter, he could die that night. On
Tuesday, Nicholas went out to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer
archer found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched
Grylls’ survival show. Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each
episode()of Man vs. Wild, Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.

most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and
writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about
the meaning of the ntence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you
to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across.
but the fact that you e them for the first time and recognize them whenever you e them, for
example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourlf a
notebook so you can write down the important words or ntences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30
minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you
can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess
what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening. For
listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their
languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every
day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow the pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve quickly, and you can
be a fluent English speaker one day.

It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad for the vacation is

make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don't. Make
the first move and you'll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends!

The US teenager Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at Hebron High
School in Texas. But when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Mandarin class,
he quickly changed his mind.
“I thought Mandarin would be more uful than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his cond
year of studying the language. He speaks Mandarin to order food at Chine restaurants and can
read social media posts from his Chine-speaking friends.
While it's a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer
engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. “Chine is a good language to know,
especially with China becoming more powerful,” he said.
Many experts agree that proficiency in a language spoken by a billion people worldwide will give
American students the edge in the global economy. “People are looking on China as our next
economic competitor, and interest in Mandarin is growing,” said Marty Abbott, the executive
director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. “We're eing it in all
parts of the country.”
According to Abbott, as many as 100,000 students are now studying Mandarin throughout the US,
in public and private schools. She said the US government has designated Mandarin as a “critical
needs” language and provides professional development programs for teachers. “Our
government wants to increa our language competency for economic competitiveness,” Abbott
said.
At the same time, the Chine government is spreading knowledge of the Chine language and
culture through Confucius Institutes t up in many US states. For example, the Confucius
Institute at the University of Texas at Dallas has been the home of a Confucius Institute for 10
years. It sponsors Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools, where tens of
thousands of students are learning Mandarin.
1Why did Thomas Cheatham decide to study Mandarin instead of Latin?
.
AMandarin was easier to learn than Latin.
.
BThe US government's policy has helped popularize Mandarin in the US.
.
CMany Americans learn Mandarin becau they worry about their economic competitiveness.
.
DTho who master Chine will be the most competitive in the US in the future.
.
4What is the main idea of the text?
.
AThe benefits of learning Mandarin for American students.
.
BHow Confucius Institutes in the US help develop Mandarin.
.
CThe rising popularity of Mandarin among American students.
.
DThe influence of China's growing power on American education.

As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chine, Spanish, and French,

tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic
Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and
raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who eks to
include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan,
and China. But he is not satisfied to simply record the voices before they disappear without
record. At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials,
including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes, which had remained unstudied and
were badly in need of care and protection. Now, through the two organizations that he has
founded, the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project, Turin has started a
campaign to make such documents, for the world available not just to scholars but to the
younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks
to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin’s notes, the endangered languages
can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

The number of TV ries about groups of friends shows just how important friendship is to us.
Psychologist Dorothy Rowe says that many of us now turn to our friends, instead of our families,
for advice, comfort and curity. One woman named Rebecca she interviewed even told her that
if she had got to choo between her husband and her friend, she would choo her friend.
Since our friends mean so much to us, it is not surprising that the happiest marriages are also
friendships. “Once the romantic stage of a relationship has pasd, it is friendship that holds
people together,” says Rowe. If the couple do not make some change, they will either get tired of
each other and break up or stay together and ek friendship with others.
But is friendship equally important to women and men? According to author Rhonda Pritchard,
women are more likely than men to have clo friends. “ You tell a friend things that you’d never
tell a partner”says one woman she interviewed. For men, friendship is usually bad on doing
,
things together rather than the private conversations that are typical of women friend. Men
share time and activities like building a fence or a business, running, riding a bike, fishing or
watching football, but they don’t often share their feelings.
Although many women find their relationships with a husband or boyfriend is not enough, many
men say that their partner is their best friend. Even women who are very happily married are
likely to become very unhappy without a clo friend and can even find the breakup of a clo
friend as painful as the end of a marriage.

As the novel coronavirus epidemic continues, one school after another has organized online
class. The most common form is live streaming, in which all participants, teacher and students
alike, sit in front of a computer camera and e each other via the platform.
Many teachers and students simply wear casual clothing for the class, and jokes emerge about
each other’s appearance. After all, most of the time it is the teacher appearing on screen, and the
students, even if called on by the teacher, will only show their faces.
Yet Shijiazhuang No.1 Middle School in Hebei province recently triggered heated discussion by
requiring teachers to wear formal suits and students to wear uniforms while attending online
class.
By Saturday morning, the related topic has become one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, with
180 million views.
“The practice can improve students’ n of formality in the online class and make them more
attentive, said Yao Haibo,” a head teacher of the school in a video clip. “It can also grant students
a n of honor and make them remember their identities as students.”
However, in the comment ctions, some micro bloggers claiming to be students disagreed.
“Not uful. Whether one works hard or not is not decided by a uniform,” was the most highly
voted comment, with 31,000 “likes”.
“Maybe a good move, but unnecessary,” was another highly voted comment.
Whatever the argument is, the problem might be solved in the not — so — distant future.

Fishing is a popular activity and every fisherman knows the rule: Keep the big ones, throw the
smaller ones back. The idea behind it is simple —the larger fish are probably older. If you keep
the smaller ones, they won’t be able to reproduce, and the fish population is in danger.
But fishing out the largest fish from a population has an unwanted effect: Over time, fewer adult
fish get really big. If only the smaller fish reproduce, then future generations become

smaller. This is an example of evolutionin action.
(进化)
One scientist, Dr. David Conover, has spent the last decade studying the effects of the “keep the
big ones” rule and if they can be reverd.

To t up his experiment, Conover and his team caught hundreds of silverside fish and divided
them into six groups. For two groups, Conover followed the “keep the large ones” rule and took
out the biggest fish.
For two other groups, he removed only the small fish. For the last two groups, he removed fish at
