When you walk on a sandy beach, it takes more energy than striding down a sidewalk — becau the weight
of your body pushes into the sand. Turns out, the same thing is true for vehicles driving on roads. The weight of
the vehicles creates a very shallow indentation (凹陷) in the pavement (路面) — and it makes it such that it’s
continuously driving up a very shallow hill.
Jeremy Gregory, a sustainability scientist at M.I.T. and histeam modeled how much energy could be saved —
and green-hou gas avoided — by simply stiffening (硬化) the nation’s roads and highways. And they found
that stiffening 10 percent of the nation’s roads every year could prevent 440 megatons of carbon dioxide
equivalent emissions over the next five decades — enough to offt half a percent of projected transportation
ctor emissions over that time period. To put tho emissions savings into context — that amount is equivalent to
how much CO2 you’d spare the planet by keeping a billion barrels of oil in the ground — or by growing ven
billion trees — for a decade.
The results are in the Transportation Rearch Record.
As for how to stiffen roads? Gregory says you could mix small amounts of synthetic fibers orcarbon
nanotubes into paving materials. Or you could pave with cement-bad concrete, which is stiffer than asphalt (沥
青).
This system could also be a way to shave carbon emissions without some of the usual hurdles. Usually, when
it comes to reducing emissions in the transportation ctor, you’re talking about changing policies related to
vehicles and also driver behavior, which involves millions and millions of people — as oppod to changing the
way we design and maintain our pavements. That’s just on the order of thousands of people who are working in
transportation agencies. And when it comes to retrofitting (翻新) our streets and highways —tho agencies are
where the rubber meets the road.
4. Why does the author mention “walk on a sandy beach” in paragraph 1?
A. To prent a fact. B. To make a contrast.
C. To explain a rule. D. To share an experience.
5. What suggestion does the author give to reduce CO2 emissions?
A. Hardening the road. B. Keeping oil in the ground.

6. What is the advantage of this suggestion?
A. Gaining more support. B. Consuming less money.
C. Involving more people. D. Facing fewer usual obstacles.
7. What does the underlined part mean in the last paragraph?
agencies are likely to make more rules.
B. Tho agencies will change some related policies.
C. Tho agenciesmight put more rubber tires on the roads.
D. Tho agencies will play a key role in making this happen.

There is an old Chine proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade,” and
this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is
sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter
relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. The characteristics include
responsibilities and unconditional love, whichprecludemothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend.
Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and
gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wi they are becau they have been alive at least 20 years longer
than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very clo and satisfying. This
generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increas the likelihood of shared
companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers,
responsible for maintaining(保持) and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and
daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even clor together.
Best friends may ormay not continue to be best friends, but for better or wor; the mother and daughter
relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. Sometimes this is not an
equal relationship. Daughters don’t always feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. But mothers
never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling
responsible for their happiness. The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by
any other. Mothers always “trump(胜过)” friends.
8. What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. differ. B. benefit. C. prevent. D. change.
9. What can we learn from what Marina said?
A. Best friends will not spend money on her wedding.
B. Best friends will not remind her of important issues in life.
C. Her mother is wir on account of her age.
D. Her mother is definitely not her best friend.
10. Why can a mother and a daughter build a even clor relationship today?
A. Becau they share advanced technology with each other.
B. Becau they work together to support the whole family.
C. Becau they experience the same values and traditions.
D. Becau they have common experience in life and work.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to build a good mother and daughter relationship.
B. A mother-daughter relationship is irreplaceable.
C. Mothers want to be daughters’ friends.
D. A daughter is a mother’s best friend.
D
At the World Economic Forum last month, President Trump drew claps when he announced the United States
would respond to the forum's proposal to plant one trillion(万亿) trees to fight climate change. The trillion-tree
idea won wide attention last summer after a study published in the journal Science concluded thatplanting so
many trees was “the most effective climate change solution to date”.
If only it were true. But it isn't. Planting trees would slow down the planet's warming, but the only thing that
will save us and future generations from paying a huge price in dollars, lives and damage to nature is rapid and
considerable reductions in carbon relea from fossil fuels, to net zero by 2050.
Focusing on trees as the big solution to climate change is a dangerous diversion(偏离). Wor still, it takes
attention away from tho responsible for the carbon relea that are pushing us toward disaster. For example, in
the Netherlands, you can pay Shell an additional 1 euro cent for each liter of regular gasoline you put in your tank,
to plant trees to balance the carbon relea from your driving. That's clearly no more than disaster slightly delayed.
The only way to stop this planet from overheating is through political, economic, technological and social solutions
that end the u of fossil fuels.
There is no way that planting trees, even across a global area the size of theUnited States, can absorb the
huge amounts of fossil carbon relead from industrial societies. Trees do take up carbon from the atmosphere as
they grow. But this uptake merely replaces carbon lost when forests were cleared in the first place, usually long
ago. Regrowing forests where they once grew can undo some damage done in the past, but even a trillion trees
can't store enough carbon to head off dramatic climate changes this century.
In a sharp counter argument to last summer's Paper in Science, Justin Gillis wrote in the same journal in
October that the study's findings were inconsistent with the dynamics of the global carbon cycle. He warned that
“the claimthat global tree restoration(复原) is our most effective climate solution is simply scientifically incorrect
and dangerously misleading”.
12. What do we know about the trillion-tree idea?
A. It was published in a journal.
B. It was propod last summer.
C. It was put forward by Trump.
D. It drew lots of public attention.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. A drawback of the tree planting strategy.
B. An example of balancing carbon relea.
C. An anecdote of making a purcha at Shell.
D. A responsibility for politicians and economists.
14. What was Justin Gillis's attitude towards global tree restoration?
A. Indifferent. B. Oppod.
C. Hesitant. D. Supportive.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Contradictory Ideas on Tree Planting.
B. A Trillion Trees Come to the Rescue.
C. Planting Trees Won't Save the World.
D. The Best Solution to Climate Change.

I was going home by bike in a cold afternoon when my bike broke down. As I was wondering how to do, an old
man came over. He offered to help me and soon my bike repaired. I thanked him but asked how to reward him.
She shook his head and then told me a story about how a boy had helped him two year before. His story moved
me deep. I looked at the man, with my eyes filling with tears. I never thought he could keep such a little incident in
the mind for years. Only then do I begin to believe that one good turn derves another.

I couldn’t imagine who it would be. When I opened the door, an old man stood there, who was dresd in dirty

“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” he said, his blue eyes full of hope.
“Are they from your garden?” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.
“Yes,” his voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of tho,
too? ”
My heart softened, and I wondered if he was badly in need of quite a bit of money. With a sigh(叹息) I said,
“Plea step inside and I’ll get my money. ”
