constructionin1997,butworkwastemporarilyinterruptedbytheAsianFinancial
Crisisinthelate1990sandlatertoaccommodatedesignchangesbyMoriBuilding
ldingofthetowerisfinancedbyveralmultinationalfirms,including

Architecture
Themostdistinctivefeatureinthedesignofthebuildingisanapertureatthepeak.
Theoriginaldesignspecifiedacircularaperture,46m(151ft)indiameter,toreduce
thestressofwindpressure,aswellasrveasasubtextforthedesign,since
"Chinemythologyreprentstheearthwithasquareandtheskywithacircle".It
alsorembledaChinemoongateduetoitscircularforminChinearchitecture.
However,thisinitialdesignbeganfacingprotestsfromsomeChine,includingthe
mayorofShanghai,whoconsideredittoosimilartotherisingsundesignofthe
enthensuggestedthatabridgebeplacedatthebottomofthe

designtoMoriBuildingandatrapezoidalholereplacedthecircleatthetopofthe
