Traffic Technology Drives to Clear the Road
The world’s leading traffic technology scientists will meet in Paris this week to find a way of easing congestion on the roads and developing the auto mated highways of the 21st century.
Nearly 2,000 delegates are expected to attend the Four-day event, which begins on Wednesday. It will be addresd by Dr Brian Mawhinney, the transport cretary,as well as the heads of veral Car companies.
Among the technologies on show will be vehicle—-to--roadside communication links to provide drivers with up to date traffic information;in-ground and overhead nsors that monitor the level and volume of traffic;low-cost satellite receivers that allow drivers to pinpoint their position anywhere on earth;and in-vehicle navigation systems able to guide drivers along the least congested streets.
“This will be the first event of its kind where the world’s leading transport rearchers will be able to discuss new technological developments with road ur groups and highway authorities,”says Eric Sampson, chairman of the main organizing committee, and deputy chief scientist at the Department of Transport in London.
Eric Sampson,
The technologies under discussion include systems that are ready for implementation, others that will be introduced within a few years, and more futuristic systems that will be ud in the next century to create ‘fully automatic’ cars.
Road tolling technology is a top priority, especially in Britain.Several systems will be tested as part of the electronic tolling trials starting on the M3 motorway near Basingstoke next spring. As well as debiting drivers for using the roads, the same tolling technology could be ud to cut traffic.
Basingstoke
The systems to be shortlisted by the Department of Transport in the next few months will u microwave nsors on overhead gantries——or cellular mobile phone links to detect every vehicle travelling on theroad and then debit a smart card on its windscreen.
Once in place, the same communication links could be ud to nd other uful information between vehicles and the roadside, bringing the ‘smart’ highway clor to reality. For instance,a trial in Portugal enables drivers to book a parking space in the center of Lisbon while they are still driving along an approach road.
In-vehicle route-guidance systems are already coming into u.In Japan, more than 500000 cars have a route, guidance system on their dashboards. In Britain, guidance systems made by Sony,Panasonic,Philips and Bosch are expected to be available from1996.
With the more advanced versions,a comprehensive digitized road map of the country is stored on a CD-ROM in the car boot and contains the location of every known road, junction and tourist attraction.
Drivers simply input their destination (using a simple Qwerty or touch-pad keyboard) before beginning their journey, and follow directional arrows on a small screen as they drive.
As each system also receives ‘live’ traffic updates from a special radio channel or roadside-to-vehicle cellular communication link. vehicles will automatically be routed along the least congested roads.
In the long term, cars will be designed to communicate directly with the highways.Vo
lvo has demonstrated a system in which speed limit signs on the roadside are able to take over a car’s controls and reduce the vehicle’s speed automatically.
