Subject-verb agreement 主谓一致
In the English language, the predicator (verb) should be in agreement with the subject in person and number. The basic principle of subject-verb agreement is that singular subjects require singular verbs and plural subjects require plural verbs.

When collective nouns are ud as the subject, it is rather difficult for us to choo the verbs in correct number. Some of them are always plural, such as cattle, clergy, folk, gentry, kindred, mankind, militia, people, personnel, police, vermin, youth, etc, so they require plural verbs. p. Still some of them always require singular verbs for they are regarded as singular with no exception, including clothing, crockery, cutlery, foliage, footwear, glassware, hardware, hosiery, jewelry, merchandi, millinery, poetry, scenery, stationary, underwear, etc.

Compound subjects joined by “and” or “both…and…” normally require plural verbs, except when they are considered as one person, one thing or a t of things, or when the two compound subjects are both singular and modified by every, each, no, or many a. On the other hand, when compound subjects are joined by structures like “… or…”, “either… or…”, “neither… nor…”, “not… but…”, and “not only… but also…”, according to the principle of proximity, the verb generally agrees with the nearer one. And in there-be patterns, the verb “be” must agree with the clost subject in number.

Sometimes between the subject and its verb are modifiers like phras introduced by accompanied by, along with, apart from, as well as, besides, but, combined with, except, in addition to, including, like, more than, no less than, other than, rather than, together with, with, etc, or claus, which must not confu the agreement of the verb with the subject.

Some nouns that end in “-s” are singular in reality, but quite often we may be fooled into believing that they are plural. So we should be always aware that they need singular verbs. The nouns include acoustics, classics, economics, electronics, ethics, linguistics, mathematics, mechanics, optics, plastics, phys回函格式
ics, statistics, tactics, arthritis, diabetes, measles, mumps, phlebitis, shingles, billiards, checkers, dominoes, draughts, and so forth. It should also be remembered that some of them may precede plural verbs when they denote specific things.

When nouns following phras like “a pair of, a kind/type/sort of, a ries of, a piece of, a ries of, a portion of etc”, singular verbs are often ud as the predicator.

Nominal adjectives require plural verbs when they refer to a class of people, whereas they need singular verbs when they refer to a particular person or a class of things.
