【Abstract】 This paper centers on introducing something about American education from my
view.

As we all know, American educational system is totally different from that of China. In the following passages I would like to introduce something about American education from my view.
Quite different from our Chine exam-oriented education system, the United States do not have a uniform national educational system, indeed. Schools are maintioned by state and local governments. But the general goal is not to take exams but to achieve universal literacy and to provide their own individual welfare as well as that of the general public. To begin with ,American schools highly value“learning by inquiry”and “learning by doing”methods while we stress more on theory learning. American students are always encouraged to ask questions in class. Class discussion is common becau it embodies the principle of “learning by expressing onelf”.Schools are not only to pass on knowledge but also to help create new knowledge. Students are encouraged to learn by doing becau it is easier said than done.
In elementary and condary education period, there is no unified national curriculum in the United States and textbooks are chon by the state or local educational authorities .But certain basic subjects are required and taught at all schools. The average state requirements for high school graduation are 17.5“units”of cour work. After achieving the required units , students can take additional units as “electives”which range from specialized academic to vocation subjects such as science, industrial trades, foreign languages, driver education , marriage training and “shop”(construction and repair of machines).

For higher education and universities in American, it also values the practice and rearch processing very much. In addition ,the American education advocates “the equal opportunity of education for all”. The United States has established the school district system to provide equal education to all children .Children in the same school district have to go to the same public school regardless of color and academic performance. education and every child is entitled to 13 years of education at the public expens. The normal school-leaving age is 17 or 18. There are more than 100 thousand schools for the 60 billion American children. The total expens of the schools exceeded $125000 million a year in 1980s and much more nowadays.
American elementary school normally means grade 1 (kindergarten) through 8. But in some places elementary school means grade 1 through 6. Secondary school generally means grade 9-12. The grades are popularly known for “high school”.But in many places the term “junior high school ”is ud to mean grades 7-9. And when grades 7-9 are included with 10-12, and six grades are said to constitute the “nior high school”.
