The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a great American novelist is a novel of great value in the world literature.
The Scarlet Letteravecgbbs describes the passionate but forbidden love affair between Arthur Dimmesdale, a nsitive, religious young man and Hester Prynne, a nsuous and beautiful woman. Its background is Boston in 1650 in the early Puritan colonization. It highlights the Calvinistic obssion with morality, xual repression, guilt and confession, and spiritual salvation. The heroine of the novel is Hester Prynne who husband is Roger Chillingworth. But she committed adultery with Arthur Dimmesdale and bore a child Pearl. So she’s punished by the society by wearing “A” letter which reprents adultery, a token of her sin. And on Arthur Dimmesdale’s side, Roger Chillingworth became his doctor and tormented him, and finally Arthur Dimmesdale died with a public confession and the revelation of his sin. And also, Roger Chillingworth also died with on life aim to go on. Only Hester Prynne and Pearl lived on.

Simply speaking, in my opinion, Hawthorne conveys a negative attitude towards the patriarchal system. I will explain my view mainly from the analysis of the fates of the four main characters.
conjunctionIn the first place, it is the fate of the heroine of the novel, that is, Hester Prynne. Hester, in a great part, is submit to the patriarchal system. She, though, with her three times of resistance, still did many things which were consistent with the patriarchal system but went against her will. First, it is can be en from the novel directly in Chapter 8. That is, she is at the resistance of the right of the up-bringing of Pearl. Second, it is in Chapter 17. We can e that it is the resistance of the exposure of the real identity of Roger Chillingworth. And third, in Chapter 18, it can be en that she is resistant and wants to leave with the priest, Arthur Dimmesdale. But mostly she is submitted to the authority which caud her painful. Therefore, mostly, she lived a sad and mirable life. There are many textual evidences. For example, “All the light and graceful foliage of her character h
ad been withered up by this red-hot brand, and had long ago fallen away, leaving a bare and harsh outline, which might have been repulsive, had she possd friends or companions to be repelled by it.” (Chapter 8). From this, we can e that she is really suffered. And next one, “With the words, she advanced to the margin of the brook, took up the scarlet letter, and fastened it again into her bosom. Hopefully… As if there were a withering spell in the sad letter, her beauty, the warmth and richness of her womanhood, departed, like fading sunshine; and a grey shadow emed to fall across her.” (Chapter 19). From this, we can e that after Hester Prynne threw the scarlet letter, she again picked it up, and worn it. She can not escape from the miry, in the other words, she can not escape from the patriarchal system.

In the cond place, it is Arthur Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale’s tragedy is the product of the patriarchal system. On one side, he, as a priest, has to protect the patriarchal system; however, on the other hand, his soul is tormented by it. He is suffering a lot all his life. At last, his revelation of the Scarlet Letter and his death made him relieved. The author shows a great sympathy to this character. There are also many textual evidences. For ex
ample, “… the young minister at once came forward, pale, and holding his hand over his heart, as was his custom whenever his peculiarly nervous temperament was thrown into agitation. He looked now more careworn and emaciated than as we described him at the scene of Hester’s public ignominy; and whether it were his failing health, or whatever the cau might be, his large dark eyes had a world of pain in their troubled and melancholy depth.” (Chapter 8). From this, we can e that, whenever he turned up, he is always holding his hand over his heart and looked very pitiable. Another evidence, “yea, woman, thou sayest truly!” cried Chillingworth … “better had he died at once! Never did mortal suffer what this man has suffered. And all, all, in the sight of his worst enemy! …” (Chapter 14). It shows directly that from Roger Chillingworth’s mouth, that is, from the mouth of his enemy, he is really suffering greatly.
adjustedIn the third place, it is Roger Chillingworth. Roger Chillingworth is the symbol of patriarchal system and Puritanism. The sole goal of his life is to take revenge on Arthur Dimmesdale, who went against the patriarchal system, that is, the priest caud him not steady in his family as a husband or a man. However, with the death of Arthur Dimmesdal
e, he failed and he is written to be out of existence by the author. In all, Hawthorne hated this character very much. He writes that Chillingworth is very ugly and evil. For example, “At first, his expression had been calm, meditative, and scholar-like. Now, there was something ugly and evil in his face, which they had not previously noticed, and which grew still the more obvious to sight, the oftener they looked upon him….” (Chapter 9). “We are not, Hester, the worst sinners in the world. There is one wor than even the polluted priest! That old man’s revenge has been blacker than my sin. He has violated, in cold blood, the sanctity of a human heart. Thou and I, Hester, never did so!” (Chapter 17). Both of the evidences show the great hatred to Roger Chillingworth of the author.
And lastly, it is Pearl. Pearl is the strong rebel towards patriarchal system. She, as Hawthorne wrote, is always smiling, a happy and innocent angel. She hates everything that reprents patriarchal system, and defies all the authorities. She loves very much the freedom and the nature. And at last, she left New England which is controlled by patriarchal system, and lived, according to the last chapter of the novel, a happy life somewhere el. For example, “Pearl felt the ntiment, and requited it with the bitterest
hatred that can be suppod to rankle in a childish bosom. … it appalled her, nevertheless, to discern here again, a shadowy reflection of the evil that had existed in herlf. All this enmity and passion had Pearl inherited, by inalienable right, out of Hester’s heart.” (Chapter 6). This shows that Pearl’s resistance. After she’s scolded by the little puritans, she scolded back more bitterly. And another one, “ there’s no law , nor reverence for authority, no regard for human ordinances or opinions, right or wrong, mixed up with that child’s composition.” … “ I saw her, the other day, bespatter the Governor himlf with water, at the cattle-trough in Spring Lane. What, in heaven’s name, is she? Is the imp altogether evil? Hath she affections? Hath she any discoverable principle of being?” (Roger Chillingworth to Arthur Dimmesdale) (Chapter 10). From Roger Chillingworth’s words, we can e more clearly that he is a true rebel towards the patriarchal system.
