My View to the Typology of English Dictionaries

From the lecture which was given by Prof. Men, I realized that there were various types for English dictionaries. One reason is that lexicology has developed gradually with a great many dictionaries compiled simultaneously, the other reason is that lexicographers have paid more attention to the typology and have considered as a crucial important part for compiling dictionaries. In a traditional way, lexicographers usually focus on the content, or form of the dictionaries, that is to say, they are aware of the inner structure of dictionaries, as well as they only care about their own ones without making a comparison among different dictionaries together, irrespective of the outer structure, which means they ldom classify dictionaries from macroscopical angle. In another words, lexicographers don’t take the type of dictionaries into consideration. Nowadays, with the development of lexicography, there appear many dictionaries in the book market; learners have to choo one according to their own opinions or recommendation. I think their rights to buy a dictiona
ry are rather random. Therefore, at this moment, typology of English dictionaries should be considered as an important one not only for the readership but also for the lexicographers.
There are three advantages of typology. First, it makes readers’ minds clear to choo a proper dictionary for themlves. Second, it makes compilers know the trend of development of dictionaries, so as to compile the more practical dictionaries for the readers. Third, it can benefit librarians to collect the different types of dictionaries within limited time and improve efficiency of their work.
In my point of view, I classify the dictionary according to the needs of reader. I still consider that the readers’ respon can reflect whether this dictionary is good or bad. Therefore, in order to compile a satisfying dictionary, lexicologists should put the position of the readers into the top rank and be aware of their needs as well as avoid any other elements. I want to highlight their roles in order to help the lexicographers find the proper way to compile a practical dictionary for the learners. As we know that there are many typologies of dictionaries, but many of them are overlapping with each other. Therefore, I try my best to solve the problem as possible as I can, although there must be
still some demerits of this typology.
