英语中的隐喻性谚语
谚语是人民群众口头流传的固定语句，用简单通俗的话来反映深刻的道理。谚语是民间集体创造、广为口传、言简意赅并较为定型的艺术语句，是民众丰富智慧和普遍经验的规律性总结，闪耀着人民智慧的光芒。
隐喻性谚语指的是带有可见的或不可见的概念隐喻结构的谚语，或者是带有语言层面的隐喻表达的谚语。也就是说它们包括带“A是B”结构的隐喻性谚语和带有语言层面的隐喻表达的谚语。带“A是B”结构的隐喻性谚语的例子有：失败是成功之母；承诺是债务，等等。前文我们区别过带有语言层面的隐喻表达和概念隐喻的不同，谚语里也一样。带有语言层面的隐喻表达的谚语，如：时间证明一切。这句里“证明”这个词的主语往往是“人”，句子隐含了“时间是人”之意。源域“人”使人们更易理解目标域“时间”。这句谚语的隐喻意义为：人们随着时间将看清所有的事情。
隐喻性谚语的特点有四个方面：
第一，隐喻性谚语是认识抽象概念的工具。日常生活中，我们常遇到一些抽象的、难以捉摸的概念，事实上通过字面的表达我们很难解释和理解它们。隐喻性言语有助于我们把它们视为可比较的目标以更方便地理解这些抽象概念。
第二，隐喻性谚语在句子层面是习惯性的表达。隐喻性谚语属于习语有固定形式。严格来说，很多谚语是不能改变它们的现存结构的，如：我们不能把“时间是金钱”说成“时间是美元”。其次隐喻性谚语是句子，它们是一个整体而不是句子的一部分。如：我们不能说“失败是成功之母”意为“失败是母亲”等等。

第四，隐喻性谚语形式简洁、语言形象、音韵优美。隐喻性谚语源于生活被人们口头创造。
进过几次的修改后，谚语常是简短而简单的，很多种语言中的修辞方式，包括隐喻、各种韵律都被运用以使谚语优美化。
