It sounds like you know quite a bit about picasso
David: I thought I might find you in here after class, so I checked as I pasd by. Sure enough, here you are.
Mike: How did your class go?
David: Oh, it went OK. I sat at the back of the room, so I wasn't paying that much attention.
Mike: Dave, you never change.
David: Never mind about me. How was your date with Cathy the day before yesterday?
Mike: It wasn't a date. She just wanted me to take her to the art exhibit becau she didn't know how to get there.
David: And she couldn't ask someone?
Mike: I can't help it if she thinks I'm the best tour guide in Beijing.
David: So how was the art show?
Mike: I really enjoyed it. The exhibit was at the centre of the building. That made it easy to
grillgo through the sculptures so you could e them from all sides.
David: How surprising to think of you at an art show.
As I walked around the exhibit and listened to Cathy's explanations, I grew to appreciate art. That's why I'm looking through the art books. There are a lot of great artists I never knew about.
David: Are you starting to show off how cultured you are?
Mike: Not at all. This stuff is really interesting. Look at this sculpture. It's by an artist called Pablo Picasso. An Inuit sculpture we saw is just like Picasso's sculptures.
David: What's it suppod to be?
Mike: I think it's an abstract sculpture. At times Picasso painted abstracts. What does it look like to you?
David: Well, it's round, but not as round as a circle. Could it be a woman's head?
Mike: It might be. Picasso not only made sculptures, he also painted hundreds, maybe thousands of paintings. What do you think of this one?
David: Wow, it's hard to figure this one out.
That's one of his most famous paintings. It's called "Guernica" and it's about the suffering of innocent people and animals during war. See the hor's head thrown back as if it were screaming in great pain?
David: Yes, when you keep looking at it you can recognize more and more details. It looks like he has painted many people in great pain.
Mike: Yes, he wanted to show the suffering caud by the war. Guernica is really the most famous anti-war painting ever done. His strong feelings about what happened in the Spanish Civil War led him to join the Communist Party in 1944. He remained a loyal member of the Party to the end of his long life in 1973.
David: Gee, it sounds like you know quite a bit about Picasso already. How long have you been reading about him?
Mike: No, I haven't read that much about him yet, but I'm definitely going to read more ab
out him. He's a fascinating artist and certainly one of the most famous artists of all time.
David: Well, I'll have to leave you with Picasso becau I have a basketball practice in fifteen minutes. Do you want to shoot a few baskets later?
Mike: Sure. Sounds great.
David: Could we meet at 4:30?
Mike: Yes, I'll be free then. I'll wait for you downstairs by the back door. We can go out together.
David: See you later.
Mike: Have a good practice.
