with nucleating and clarifying agents
Great Lakes Chemical Corp is extending its port-folio of polymer additives with a new line of nucle-ating agents. The first two products to be launched are Clearlite NU 004 nucleating agent and Clearlite NU 005 nucleating and clarifying agent. Clearlite NU 004 is a micronized, sodium ben-zoate-bad product that increas the overall crystallization rate of mi-crystalline polymers like polypropylene, polyamide and polyester, resulting in productivity gains and improved mechanical and physical properties,Great Lakes says. Clearlite NU 005 is a sorbitol-bad prod-uct that in addition to its nucleating function also acts as a clarifying agent, reducing haze and sig-nificantly increasing polymer transparency. “Nucleating agents are ud extensively by Great Lakes’core customers, and we have long been incorporating the products in our Anox®NDB®customized additive blends”,comments Henri Steinmetz, executive vice president of polymer stabilizers for Great Lakes. The addi-tion of nucleating and clarifying agents to the company’s broad portfolio is a logical step that further enhances its rvice to the polymer industry,he adds. Axel introduces new process aids and internal mould relea agents
Axel Plastics Rearch Laboratories,Inc has recently introduced veral new internal mould relea and process aid additives in its MoldWiz range. MoldWiz INT-39PSR is a new process aid additive that provides scratch and scuff resistance to components made of polypropylene. The com-pany says it is especially uful in the manufacture of components for the automotive and consumer appliance industries. “This new additive is designed to help manufacturers in the automotive and appliance ctors to enhance the cosmetic appearance of moulded components, eliminate weld or knit line imperfections, and improve mar resistance. Reducing scratching and scuffing in part production and handling means fewer rejects and this translates into real cost savings,”says Nancy Teufel, technical support manager for Axel. The new additive is also claimed to improve resin flow and cavity fill and improve dispersion of other additives including reinforcements, fillers and pigments. At a 0.3% loading,INT-33PSR is said to provide shorter cycle times, and reduced temperature and pressure requirements. The proprietary formulation has no adver effect on mould
ed parts that require decorating, printing or plating, and is suitable for processing all polyethylenes and polypropylenes including TPO,TPE,TPV and TPUs,the company says. MoldWiz INT-326PWD is a combined internal mould relea and process aid designed for u with powdered novolac resins and especially for phenolic bulk moulding compounds (BMC). It is a proprietary blend of copolymers,cross-linked polyolefins and organic phosphate esters with modified fatty acids. Available in powder form, the recommended level of addition is gen-erally 1% by resin weight. Benefits imparted by the new agent are said to include clean relea of parts from the mould, with all parts ready for condary processing without the need to de-grea,and without detriment to the physical properties of the moulded part.
For polyester BMC and sheet moulding com-pounds (SMC) Axel has developed MoldWiz INT-4082,a new powdered internal mould relea intended as a replacement for zinc stearate, the traditional internal mould relea for the formu-lations. According to the company, the goal was to provide mould relea properties equal to or bet-ter than zinc stearate, without leaving any residue on the surface of moulded parts as is often the ca when zinc stearate is ud. Preliminary reports indicate that INT-4082 can also be loaded at lower additive levels than zinc stearate,Axel says. The company is targeting INT-4082 powder to automotive and other discriminating moulding

applications where a non-fogging internal mould relea that will not interfere with condary processing is valued.
保镖主题曲下载Axel’s MoldWiz INT-1292VP is a new internal mould relea developed for low VOC gel coats. The low styrene resins characteristically do not flow or wet the mould surface as well as reg-ular gel coats. However, incorporation of INT-1292VP in a low VOC gel coat is said to signif-icantly improve the ability of the gel coat to wet out on moulds.
Finally,MoldWiz INT-33PA is an internal lubri-cant. This class of additive can not only be ud as viscosity modifiers and substitutes for external relea agents but also to reduce the coefficient of friction. Axel says that reducing friction provides benefits to injection moulders beyond aiding relea, making moulded parts easier to asmble and contributing to improved cosmetics and bet-ter mechanical performance of moulded asm-blies. The additive is said to be effective at load-ing levels of about 0.25–0.3% of resin weight but slightly higher levels can be ud to impart addi-tional surface lubricity if required.

oxide available for antimicrobial applications Nanomaterials company Nanopha Technologies Corp of Romeoville,IL,has announced the avail-ability of silver-doped nanocrystalline tin oxide at pilot levels. The new nanomaterial is approximate-ly 30 nm in size with a silver content of 3% by weight, the company says. The nanoparticles are non-porous,den,discrete and homogenous. The material is available as an antimicrobial additive for plastics and rubbers and is also being targeted for other industrial antimicrobial applications such as wood prervation, marine antifouling, and speciality paints and coatings. Conductive coatings and electronic materials are also said to be potential application areas. The company is interested in joint development opportunities in both the industrial antimicro-bial and electronic materials areas. According to Dr Ed Ludwig, vice president of business development at Nanopha, the compa-ny is targeting antimicrobial applications, both industrial and in personal care,as a potential growth area for nanomaterials. “We expect to develop additional materials for the potential markets during 2004”,he says. The company recently introduced doped zinc oxide nanomate-rials for antimicrobial and other applications (Additives for Polymers,August 2003). 北京新东方国际高中
Engelhard Corp has introduced new patented pigment technology that enables intricate,high-contrast markings in a variety of polymer mate-rials typically ud in such industries as plastic packaging, automotive and consumer goods. The company says its Mark-it™ lar-marking pig-ment helps provide indelible, fast and program-mable lar marking of part numbers, bar codes, dates of manufacture and expiration dates on plastic surfaces. Other applications include com-pany logos, markings for product differentiation and as an anti-counterfeiting deterrent. Engelhard Mark-it is also the first lar-marking pigment to receive approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has approved its u at loadings up to 0.5% in poly-olefins that contact food under certain condi-tions. Engelhard says a loading of only 0.1% of Mark-it pigment is sufficient to obtain a high-quality mark in most polyolefins.
