In a very short period of ten years, the internet became an indispensable part of business communication. Posted letters became known as “snail mail” as the much more convenient and productive email began to replace a substantial part of letter writing. Company brochures and main media advertising began
intouchablesto be replaced by brochure-ware and online promotion.
But the internet has also had a downside for many organizations. Companies report a concerning loss of productivity as employees become distracted checking their private email and social networks at work. Employers’ respons to this costly phenomenon have varied from deliberate and responsible to the draconian and just plain silly.
