Religion plays an important role in his work, especially in Aeneid, an epic poem in twelve books compod in the last years of his life. It was designed to celebrate the origin and growth of the Roman Empire. It tells of the story of Aeneas who, after the fall of Troy and long wanderings, founded a Trojan ttlement in Latium and thus became the ancestors of Romans. The epic provided an account of the origins of the Roman civilization and soon won Virgil the favour of Octavian and the ruling class. Its epic form afforded scope for the mythical and supernatural elements, as found in Homeric epic. It enabled the ancient beliefs and practices of magic and religion to be revealed. It glorified the Roman people and their principle families by depicting their ancestors in the heroic age, and by enlisting the device of prophecy, recounted the historical triumphs of Rome and Augustus. The striking feature of the poem is the conception of Italy as a single nation and of Roman history as a continuous whole form the founding of the city to the full expansion of the empire.
The yizuAeneid succeeds in challenging the pre-eminence of the great Homeric poems as standards for the epic genre. There are many Homeric reminiscences, such as Aeneas’
many adventures on his way to Italy in the first half of the epic, and the similar warring experiences between the Trojans and the Italians over a woman in the cond half. Virgil nevertheless could always transform what he learned from the Greek epics. He invigorated sounds, n images so that the Aeneid later became a model epic in the European tradition.
