(1)意为“讲(故事等);叙述(事实、奇遇等)”,其后跟名词或从句。如:

(2)意为“把……联系起来”。与to或with搭配。如:
It is difficult to relate to the results with/to any known cas.

Step 4: 定语从句的学习
一、在复合句中修饰某一名词或代词的从句叫定语从句,一般紧跟在它所修饰的先行词(定语从句所修饰的词)之后。
定语从句可分为限制性定语从句(Restrictive Attributive Claus)和非限制性定语从句(NonRestrictive Attributive Claus)两种。区别在于:
1.形式上:限制性定语从句紧跟在先行词后面,不能用逗号把从句与先行词分隔开来;非限制性定语从句通常有逗号与句子其他成分隔开。
2.意义上:限制性定语从句使先行词的意思十分明确,成为特定的人或东西,是句子中不可缺少的成分,少了它句子就会失去意义不能成立,或意思不清楚,不能说明问题;非限制性定语从句只是对先行词作进一步的说明,没有它句子仍能成立,意思仍很清楚。如:
He is a man who/that never leaves today's work till tomorrow.
他是一个从不把今天的工作留到明天去做的人。
二、定语从句由关系词来引导。关系词有关系代词和关系副词之分。关系代词有that,which, who, whom, who, as等;关系副词有when, where, why等。定语从句中关于关系代词和关系副词最基本的用法是:which指代物,who, whom指代人,that, who既可以指代物,也可以指代人;where指代地点,when指代时间,why指代原因等等。
关系词通常有下列三个作用:(1)引导定语从句;(2)代替先行词;(3)在定语从句中担当一个成分。如:
The car which my uncle had just bought was destroyed in the earthquake.
我叔叔刚买的车在地震中被毁坏了。
在句子中,which my uncle had just bought是定语从句,修饰先行词the car; which是引导定语从句的关系词,代替先行词the car, 在定语从句中作宾语。
