Among the most popular books being written today are tho which are usually classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films of recent years have been bad on science fiction stories.
It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors can b
e found in books written hundreds of years ago. The books were often concerned with the prentation of some form of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modern stories.
Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last one hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, to mention just two well-known authors, have been translated in many languages.
Modern science fiction writers don't write about men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds which are a reflection of the world which we live in now. Becau of this their writing has obvious political undertones (含意).
In an age where science fact frequently overtakes science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Tho who are sufficiently clear-sighted to e the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology and come to terms with a continually changing view of the world.

(1) Let us take a look at the chief thing in the story ― the human body itlf. (2)A human body appears to be rather soft and delicate, compared with that of a wild animal, but it is actually surprisingly strong. (3)Indeed, its very softness and looness is an advantage: it makes man good at moving about and falling about in safety. (4)Man is the most skilful in movement of all living things of his own size, becau he can do so many different things with his limbs. Man's games show how he can control his won body. No other land creature can swim as skillfully as man; none has such varied grace; very few live as long as he; none is so strong in its natural resistance to dia. Therefore man has a great advantage in his battle against the risks of damage and death that threaten him. It is difficult to kill him so long as he is fed and in good health. Yet every day thousands of people die needlessly, even though man is naturally strong, becau tho two killers, dia and starvation, win the battle.
No one can live forever, so one might suppo that quite a large number of old people would come t
o the end of their days every year. There is, however, another thing to remember. During the time it has taken you to read this page, a considerable number of babies have been born somewhere in the world ― one is born every one and a quarter conds! Of the babies, one group can be expected to have a good long life of about venty years, becau they are lucky enough to be born in countries where living standards are high.
