The penetration of advertising into our life has gone so far that sometimes we even feel amazed by its ubiquity. Advertising is, of cour, very uful, informing us about what to buy, where to buy and how to buy, but it also has negative effects, especially bytransforming what we regard as important in our life.
Surrounded by advertiments, we can easily be led to a belief that our life is all about buying things. This widespread consumerism can persuade us into buying many things we do not really need on the one hand, and make us less content with what we have on the other, andcrave hopelessly for tho unattainable commodities. I still remember a few days ago when walking in front of a supermarket, I saw how a little girl, with her eyes glued to an advertising board, pestered her mother for the expensive toy on it that her mo
ther apparently could not afford. Advertising, then, while providing us with uful commodities information, also creates the unwanted desire at our heart and makes us unhappy.

Whether we like it or not, advertiment has been pouring into our daily life. They are so powerful that some people believe that it is not the needs of people but the power advertiment that makes commodities popular. Personally I don’t agree with this opinion.
First, let’s make clear what the real needs of people are. Real needs can be divided into two categories: the material satisfaction and spiritual satisfaction. People tend to regard material satisfaction as real needs and spiritual satisfaction as waste of money and time. This is not true. Some commodities may not be uful but they can give the owner a kind of satisfaction.
Second, let’s make clear the reason why advertiment is powerful. The key principle of advertirs is to grasp the needs of consumers, then pass the potential consumers the information that their commodities can meet your need. Advertirs can promote the needs of people, exploit the needs or even produce the needs of people. But whatever th

But there are some advertiments that exaggerate the functions of the commodities to tell the wrong information to consumers. They make the commodities popular by cheating the majority of consumers. And also there are some commodities that do harm to the health of consumers and to the society. For example, smoking is poisonous, but the advertiments try to make a heroic image of the smokers, as the result smoking is popular among young men who are dreaming to become heroes in women’s eyes. But such advertiments are minorities.
