“年”的故事
The New Year Dragon Nian 年，曾经是一条统治一方土地的恶龙。直到有一天，一位魔法武士对它施了法术。因为这个法术，年被迫躲在海底的山里。但是每年春天，年都会跑出来觅食，填饱它的肚子。
整个村里的人都很害怕。

新春到来的前一天晚上，梅梦到了那位魔法武士。武士对梅说：“年的力量越来越强，而我的法术一年比一年弱。你必须在十五天之内打败年，否则年将永远自由。我的这根拐杖会帮你的。”
梅问：“为什么是我呢？”“因为你出生在金龙年。这是命中注定的。”武士说。
第二天早上，梅醒来时发现，魔法武士的拐杖正摆放在她身边。“梅！”妈妈大喊道，“快起床啦！年来了，我们必须逃跑并躲起来！”

梅听到可怕的嘶吼声。年朝着梅跑来。她能看到年尖锐的牙齿。梅抓住拐杖，又拿起一个锅，用拐杖敲打着锅，大声喊道：“走开！”年用巨大的爪子捂住耳朵。它不喜欢那噪声，这让梅有了一个很棒的主意。她对村民们喊道：“快弄出一些噪音！”村里人叫喊着，将鞭炮扔向年。于是，年逃回了它的窝。
村民们庆祝了整整五天。为了感谢梅，他们送给梅一件红色的丝绸袍子。
但到了第六天，年回来了，耳朵里塞着用来减弱噪音的棉花。梅穿着她的新袍子，将红灯笼扔到年身上。灯笼的火光和火红的袍子吓坏了年。梅再一次将村民聚在一起，让他们都穿上红衣服，点亮火光。年又跑掉了。村民们又庆祝了五天，把衣服都染成红色，烧起了熊熊烈火。
第十天晚上，魔法武士再次在梅的梦里告诉她：“年要回来报仇了。你只剩下五天时间来打败它。”
The night before the first day of spring, the magical warrior visited Mei in her dreams. He said, “Nian’s power grows stronger. And my spell grows weaker each year. You must defeat Nian in fifteen days, or Nian will be free forever. My cane （拐杖）will help you.”
Mei asked, “Why me?”

“Hurry! With Nian’s large mouth, he can eat many villagers in one bite.” Mei helped her mother hide. Then she remembered the warrior’s cane and ran to get it.
Mei heard a terrible roar. Nian made his way toward Mei. She could e his sharp teeth. Mei grabbed the cane. She also grabbed a cooking pot （锅）and banged （敲打）it with the cane. She yelled, “Go away!” Nian covered his ears with his big paws （爪子）. He didn’t like the noi, which gave Mei a wonderful idea. She yelled at the villagers, “Make a lot of noi!” The villagers shouted and threw firecrackers （鞭炮）at Nian; then he went back to his home.
The villagers celebrated for five days and gave Mei a red silk robe （袍服） to thank her.
But on the sixth day, Nian was back with cotton in his ears to muffle （降低；压低）the noi. Mei, wearing her new robe, threw a red lantern （灯笼）at Nian. The red light and the red robe frightened Nian. Mei gathered the villagers and told them to wear red clothes and light the fire. Nian ran away again. The villagers celebrated for five more days, dyeing （染色） their clothes red and burning fires.
On the tenth night, the magical warrior appeared in Mei’s dream again and said, “Nian is coming back for revenge （报仇）. You only have five days to defeat him.”

By morning, Mei and the villagers filled red bags with food and stuffed them into scarecrows （稻草人）dresd in their clothes. Mei put the warrior’s cane in the scarecrow dresd in her clothes.
When Nian returned again on the fifteenth day, he gobbled up the scarecrows. But when he got to Mei’s, the cane magically allowed the warrior to catch Nian. Then, the warrior and Nian turned into two stone statues （雕像） in the middle of the village. The villagers cheered Mei’s success and held a party filled with food, lanterns, firecrackers, and lots of red things.
From then on, the villagers celebrated the new year in this way every year at the beginning of spring.
