When my sister Mertie told me she had put out tomato plants last summer, I was quite impresd.
Since she was a garden-beginner, Mertie rearched exactly how far apart to space her tomato plants; what kind of fertilizer to u; how to keep away the bugs, etc. Once they were planted, she took care of them daily, anxiously awaiting the juicy tomatoes to appear. But, day after day, her plants were tomato-less while all of her neighbors who had also put out tomato plants were already enjoying the fruit of their labor.
Frustrated, Mertie gave in and went to the market to arch fresh tomatoes. While paying,
Mertie told the farmer her troubles. The farmer paud to think for a moment and then asked, "Well, what kind of tomatoes did you plant?"
"I think they were called Big Boy," Mertie remembered.
"Well there's your problem," the farmer explained. "Big Boy and Better Boy tomatoes have a 95-day growing period whereas regular tomato plants produce fruit in as few as 70 days…you just have to wait a little longer for the Big Boys."
With that new knowledge, Mertie went home with excitement, knowing they would be worth the wait.
Thinking about my sister's gardening experience, I had to smile. She just didn't know that Big Boy tomatoes took longer--neither did I — but once she discovered that information, she was no longer discouraged and upt about the lack of tomatoes on her plants. Instead, she was encouraged and excited to e them a few weeks later.

【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,作者讲述了妹妹种西红柿的故事,告诉读者要实现梦想,有时需要耐心等待。
(1)考查细节理解。根据第二段中的“Mertie rearched exactly how far apart to space her tomato plants; what kind of fertilizer to u; how to keep away the bugs, etc.”可知Mertie给她种的西红柿分苗、施肥和控制害虫。没有提到浇水,故选C。
音节(2)考查细节理解。根据第五段中的“Big Boy and Better Boy tomatoes have a 95-day gro wing period whereas regular tomato plants produce fruit in as few as 70 days…you ju
st have to wait a little longer for the Big Boys.”可知Mertie 种植的西红柿品种Big Boy比一般西红柿生长需要的时间长,所以还需要一段时间才能成熟。故选D。
(3)考查推理判断。根据最后一段中的“It makes me wonder how many of us have ‘Big Boy’ dreams in our hearts, ……Instead of waiting with excitement, we give up on our dreams and……we e other people's dreams coming true, ……”

More and more comments ctions are being shut down online.
Autumn Phillips had had enough. On Aug. 19, the executive editor of the Quad- City Times in Iowa, and Illinois, US visited her website, /doc/e718519437.html
, and saw a story about a man who had been shot to death. When she got to the readers' comments ctions at the end, she was shocked by what she saw. Below the story was a growing number of comments—a racist remark about democratic votes, a negative comment about police …So Phillips decided to do something she had been thinking about for a long time: she shut down the comments ctions.
Phillips was not alone in making such a move. Last week, NPR announced k too was closing its online comments ctions. The decisions don't mean that the news outlets are no longer interested in what their audiences are thinking. Both stresd their eagerness to hear from readers and listeners on social networks. But both agreed that comments had deviated from their original intention. And so they had.
