Throughout this long, ten election, everyone has focud on the presidential candidates and how they'll change America. Rightly so, but lfishly, I'm more fascinated by Michelle Obama and what she might be able to do, not just for this country, but for me as an African-American woman. As the potential First Lady, she would have the world's attention. And that means that for the first time people will have a chance to get up clo and personal with the type of African-American woman they so rarely e.
Usually, the lives of black women go largely unexamined. The prevailing theory ems to be that we're all hot-tempered single mothers who can't keep a man. Even in the world of make-believe, black women still can't escape the stereotype of being eye-rolling, overxed females raid by our never-married, alcoholic (酗酒的) mothers.
The images have helped define the way all women are viewed, including Michelle Obama. Before she ever gets the chance to commit to a cau, charity or foundation as First Lady, her most urgent and perhaps most complicated duty may be simple to be herlf.
It won't be easy. Becau few mainstream publications have done in-depth
features on regular African-American women, little is known about who we are, what we think and w
hat we face on a regular basis. For better or wor, Michelle will reprent us all.
Just as she will have her critics, she will also have millions of fans who usually have little interest in the First Lady. Many African-American blogs have written about what they' d like to e Michelle bring to the White Hou—mainly showing the world that a black woman can support her man and rai a strong black family. Michelle will have to work to plea everyone—an impossible task. But for many African-American women like me, just a little of her poi (沉着), confidence and intelligence will go a long way in changing an image that's been around for far too long.

Passage B
Britain is not just one country and one people, even if some of its inhabitants
think so. Britain is, in fact, a nation which can be divided into veral parate parts, each part being an individual country with its own language, character and cultural traditions. Thus Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales (and even Cornwall perhaps) do not claim to belong to “England”becau their inhabitants are not strictly “English”.
They are Scottish, Irish, Welsh (or Cornish) and many of them prefer to speak their own native tongue which in turn is incomprehensible to the others.
The cultural minorities have been Britain's original inhabitants. In varying degrees they have managed to prerve their national identity, their particular customs and way of life. This is probably even more true of the remoter areas where traditional life has not been so affected by the growth of industrialism as the border areas have been. The Celtics races are said to be more emotional by nature than the English. An Irish temper is legendary! The Scots prefer to be remembered for their ballads and dances, while the Welsh are famous for their singing. The Celtic temperament as a whole produces large numbers of writers and artists, such as the Irish Bernard Shaw, the Scottish Robert Burns, and the Welsh Dylan Thomas, to mention but a few.
