The only neuromuscular electrical stimulation that is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to treat dysphagia.
Training muscles to function again
VitalStim Therapy us small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles responsible for swallowing. At the same time, trained specialists help patients "re-educate" their muscles through rehabilitation therapy.
A small, carefully calibrated current is delivered by specially designed electrodes.
The current stimulates motor nerves in the throat.
The muscles responsible for swallowing contract.
The quality of the swallowing function improves.

Safety affirmed - by the FDA
NMES is routinely ud to help restore muscle function. But traditional NMES treatments are contraindicated for u on the anterior neck. The specific concerns: that stimulating the laryngeal afferents could trigger laryngospasm, and that placing electrodes too clo to the carotid artery could cau sinus bradycardia.
But VitalStim?/sup> Therapy is not a traditional treatment. And, therefore, received FDA clearance for u on the swallowing muscles.

The FDA has concluded that V italStim Therapy is safe and effective VitalStim Therapy must be prescribed by a physician. It can only be administered under the direction of certified health care professionals with at least three years' experience treating dysphagia.
The contraindications for V italStim Therapy are specific to patients suffering from dysphagia. Caution should be ud with patients who have cardiac demand pacemakers. Its u is contraindicated with patients who are verely demented and exhibit non-stop verbalization. Constant verbalization could result in aspiration during trials of oral intake. VitalStim Therapy is also contraindicated in patients with significant reflux due to u of a feeding tube. Such patients are prone to repeated cas of aspiration pneumonia, and the V italStim Therapy device has not been studied in this population. U of the VitalStim Therapy device is contraindicated in patients with dysphagia due to drug toxicity. Patients suffering from drug toxicity could aspirate during trials of oral intake.
Frequently
Q. What is Dysphagia?
A. Dysphagia is defined as any difficulty in swallowing. Symptoms of dysphagia can include coughing while swallowing or after swallowing, choking on food or liquid, the nsation of food getting stuck in the throat, pain during swallowing, shortness of breath during feeding and ont of pneumonia.
Q. What is V italStim Therapy?
A. A therapeutic intervention for the management of dysphagia. VitalStim Therapy us small electrical currents to stimulate the muscles responsible for swallowing. At the same time, trained specialists help patients "re-educate" their muscles through rehabilitation therapy.
Q. How does it work?
守护甜心85A. A small, carefully calibrated current is delivered to the motor nerves of the patient's throat through specially designed electrodes causing the muscles responsible for swallowing to contract. At the same time, a dysphagia specialist guides the patient through active swallowing therapy to re-educate normal swallow function.
Q. How is VitalStim different from conventional swallowing therapy?
unenthusiastic
A. Conventional therapy for dysphagia typically employs both compensatory strategy techniques (diet changes, head positioning or modifying bolus size) and specific techniques aimed at improving the coordination and strength of the swallowing muscles (thermal stimulation, biofeedback, mendelssohn maneuver or supraglottic swallow). V italStim Therapy is the u of electrical stimulation for activation of muscles. Rearch shows that the combination of electrical stimulation and traditional treatment techniques is very effective at restoring swallowing function. Q. How long is a treatment ssion?
A. Treatment ssions usually last an hour.
Q. How many ssions of V italStim treatment before my swallowing improves?
A. This depends a lot on the underlying medical problem causing the dysphagia. In many patients, improvement in the swallow ing function starts almost immediately. Patients often e good results in 6 to 20 treatment ssions. Initial ssions are usually delivered on a daily basis but later ssions are often given every other day.
Q. Does this work with all forms of dysphagia?
A. One of the most common forms of dysphagia is oropharyngeal dysphagia which affects stroke survivors, patients with progressive neuromuscular disorders, head and neck cancer survivors and the elderly.
Q. Does V italStim Treatment hurt?
A. No. V italStim is a non-invasive, painless treatment.
Q. Is VitalStim Therapy safe?
A. Y es. VitalStim Therapy is the only technology cleared by the FDA for restoring the swallowing function to patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia.
Q. Who can receive V italStim Therapy?

than 1 year old.
Q. Who cannot receive V italStim Therapy?
A. Most dysphagia patients can be treated with VitalStim Therapy. Some caution must be obrved for verely demented patients who exhibit non-stop verbalization, patients with significant reflux due to u of a feeding tube and patients with dysphagia due to drug toxicity.
Q. What about patients with pacemakers?
A. Caution should be ud with patients who have cardiac demand pacemakers.
Q. What are the side effects of VitalStim Treatment?
A. The only problematic issue found during the study was the occasional occurrence of skin irritation as a result of the adhesive ud to cure the stimulation electrode to the anterior portion of the neck.
Q. How effective is VitalStim Therapy?
A. Clinical trial data reported to the FDA demonstrated the following:
98.4% of patients improved their swallow function score
97.5% of patients with vere dysphagia regained swallow function past the point of PEG tube dependency
38.3% of patients with vere dysphagia regained full normal swallow function
At three-year follow up, over 76% had retained swallow function
Q. What medical specialists provide VitalStim Therapy?
A. Medical specialists that commonly specialize in swallowing disorders include Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists.
Q. Does insurance cover V italStim Therapy?
A. Medicare recognizes and provides reimburment for the treatment of swallowing dysfunction pro

Evidence/Clinical Data
Embraced by therapists, bolstered by data
Across the country, Speech Language Pathologists who u V italStim Therapy report unheard-of success. Especially among patients for whom all traditional treatment had failed. Many were beyond the six-month period of spontaneous recovery; others could not even swallow their own saliva.
The physician community, meanwhile, has been awaiting clinical results. Tho results - along with FDA clearance for treatment of dysphagia - have arrived.
Inside the clinical trial*
Objective
Compare the effectiveness of electrical stimulation (ES) treatment to thermal-tactile stimulation (TS) in patients with dysphagia.
Trial enrollment
892 patients studied from 1993 to 1998; three-year follow-up data for 300 submitted to FDA. Once hoped for. Now proven.
The clinical data is compelling. The real-world evidence is unmistakable. Even to patients with long-term dysphagia, V italStim Therapy holds remarkable potential - and abundant hope - for a
lasting solution.

At first I did not know I had had a stroke. On the day it happened, I suddenly could not walk and would get dizzy and fall every time I would try. I couldn't swallow anything, not even water.
At the hospital, where they told me what had happened to me, they put a tube into my no to give me food. Then, before I was transferred to Chattanooga Rehabilitation Hospital for therapy, they put a tube in my stomach to feed me.
The doctors told me that there was a chance they would have to do surgery to stretch my throat so that I could eat by mouth again, but they also told me I should try the V italStim first.
I didn't believe it becau I didn't think that a machine would work. But they convinced me it would, so I went along and had therapy for 30 minutes a day, every day for two weeks.
When they put the electrodes on my throat it felt like someone was grabbing my throat and moving it up and down for me. I started eating ice and swallowing during the first ssion.
I said to mylf, "There is something happening here."
It got better and better. I drank water. I tried pureed food and I swallowed it. Then bread. Salads. Crackers. Ice cream. A little bit of this. A little bit of that.
Now I am off the tube. There are some things I still can't eat. I can't get French fries down. Chee gets stuck at the back of my throat.
But other than that, I am getting back to normal. It's a miracle.
