四、Passage One(总题数:1,分数:45.00)
Only special plants can survive the terrible climate of a dert, for the are regions where the annual range of the soil temperature can be over 75℃. Furthermore, during the summer there are few clouds in the sky to protect plants from the sun's ray. Another problem is the fact that there are frequently strong winds which drive small sharp particles of sand into the plants, tearing and damaging them. The most difficult problem for all forms of plant life, however, is the fact that the entire annual rainfall occurs during a few days or weeks in spring.
Grass and flowers in dert survive from one year to the next by existing through the long, hot, dry ason in the form of eds. The eds remain inactive unless the right mount of rain falls, If no rain falls, or if insufficient rain falls, they wait until the next year. or even still the next. Another factor that helps the plants to survive is the fact that their life cycles are short. By the time that the water from the spring rains disappears--just a fe
w weeks after it fall--such plants no longer need ally.
The perennials(多年生植物) have special features which enable them to survive as plants for veral years. Thus, nearly all dert perennials have extensive root systems below ground and a small shoot system above ground. The large root network enables the plant to absorb as much water as possible in a short time. The small shoot system, on the other hand, considerably limits water loss by evaporation(蒸发).
元旦晚会策划书Another feature of many dert perennials is that after the rainy ason they lo their leaves in preparation for the long, dry ason, just as trees in wetter climates lo theirs in preparation for the winter. This reduces their water loss by evaporation during the dry ason. Then, in the next rainy ason, they come fully alive once more, and grow new branches, leaves and flowers, just as the grass and flowers in dert do.

E1 Nino is a disturbance of the world's normal climate pattern. During El Nino events, the westerly trade winds become slower and the warmer water in the western Pacific moves towards South America. There are many knock-on effects all over the world.
The home of El Nino is Peru. El Nino, "the Christ Child", was first named by Peruvian fishermen one Christmas when they noticed unusual warm currents affecting the Pacific c
oast of South America. Up and down the country, from dert m highlands, E1 Nino weather phenomena have brought destructive floods, costing £200 million in immediate and long-term damage, and undoing the work of many development projects.
"The dastruction is near total," Dominic Brain, a worker for Christian Aid reported. "Few of the hous could withstand the floodwater. Today I visited Acomayo, a shantytown (贫民区) where 17,500 people once live. Now only ten percent of the hous are still standing. The bulk of the population has lost all their posssions.
The town of Ica ldom es rain. Hous for the poor are built of adobe--sun- baked mud standing side by side in long terraces. When the River Ica burst its banks in late January, 15,000 hous were swiftly flooded. Up to 5,000 hous were destroyed--a sign not only of the force of the river, which looned huge rocks and swept them falling down born the Andean mountains, but of the vulnerability of the homes which hardly ever face rain. "They melted like chocolate," exclaimed an eye witness. "The extent of the damage was terrible!"
Almost immediately health became a problem. Without proper plumbing(排水), waste mat
ter ro to the surface of the floodwaters. People received cuts walking through the floodwater and mud Cholera--epidemic in Peru in the early nineties-- returned, with 90 reported cas in Ica province alone. The entire city ems to have drowned--first in floodwaters 1.5 meters high, and then in mud. Sadly, three people lost their lives, sucked into the floodwaters, but it was a miracle that there were not more casualties(伤亡者).
