Green Polyethylene Biopolymer, innovation transforming plastic
into sustainability
•Lower greenhou gas emissions •Made from 100% renewable
raw materials
•Recyclable
Polyethylene made from renewable sources is the result
of investments in innovation and Braskem’s commitment to the environment. The sustainable development promoted by Green PE creates value for the industry’s production chain, for Clients and for society, helping to reduce greenhou  gas emissions.
Braskem’s Green Plastic launches a new pha in the  plastics production chain, bringing innovation and new sustainable solutions.Green Polyethylene combines high performance and pro-cessability, while the u of renewable raw materials helps reduce global warming.
clo to you 下载The “I’m green™” al allows consumers to identify products that were made using Braskem’s Green Plastic. The al was developed to communicate simply and directly to the grow-ing community that values products made from renewable components, helping Clients add value to their products and foster a more sustainable future.
Green Plastic
is now a reality
The annual production of 440 million pounds of Green PE requires 160,000 acres of sugarcane, which reprents 0.02% of Brazil’s arable land.

Sustainable development for the  entire production chain
Green Plastic is the result of the combination of
Brazil’s highly developed sugarcane and ethanol industry and Braskem’s technology, innovation and commitment to sustainability, all of which benefit the entire  production chain.
Brazil: natural place for ethanol produc-tion and respecting the environment. Zero impact on the Ama
zon Rainforest and on food production
Brazil has approximately 840 million acres of arable land. Sugarcane cultivation us 20 million acres, while soybean cultivation us 60 million acres, corn cultiva-tion us 35 million acres and livestock production us 494 million acres.*
The state of São Paulo, which is located more than 1,250 miles from the Amazon Region, is Brazil’s main sugarcane producing region, accounting for some 60% of the country’s production.** The Amazon Region has a climate that is not well suited to sug-arcane production and is located outside of the Sugarcane Zone, which prevents sugar and ethanol plants from receiving licens to operate in the region.
The modernization of Brazil’s sugar and ethanol indus-try, the incread mechanization of harvesting and the preparation of ethanol plants to produce bioelectricity
assures a major competitive advantage and sustainability for the entire process, from the planting of sugarcane to the production of biopolymers.

Code of Conduct  for Ethanol Suppliers
With the support of ProForest, an independent consulting firm specialized in the responsible management of natural resources, Braskem has created a Code of Conduct for Ethanol Suppliers as part of its project to manage the
Ethanol Custody Chain. The purpo is to educate potential suppliers about the social and environmental requirements they must meet to become an ethanol supplier to the
company. This allows Braskem to strengthen its relationship with the ethanol chain, while focusing on expanding its contribution to sustainable development.
Measures must be adopted for the burning of waste in fields, biodiversity, other environmental practices,  human and labor rights and making information avail-able for studies on product life cycles. The code is
grounded in Brazilian law and modeled on the initiatives detailed in the São Paulo State Agricultural and Environ-mental Protocol, the UN Global Compact, Brazil’s Agri-cultural and Ecological Zoning for Sugarcane and Brazil’s National Commitment to Improve Labor Conditions for Sugarcane Workers.

Green Polyethylene production cycle
Braskem’s Green Plastics are made from sugarcane ethanol, which results in a smaller carbon footprint. In addition, the
increasing modernization of the ethanol industry and Braskem’s efficient process result in exceptional environmental advan-tages to the Green Polyethylene life cycle. Each ton of Green Polyethylene captures and questers up to 2.5 lbs* of CO 2 from the atmosphere, helping reduce greenhou gas emissions and prevent global warming.
When compared with the carbon capture of petrochemical polyeth-ylene, the environmental advantage of Braskem’s Green Polyethyl-ene is even greater, since each ton of Petrochemical Polyethylene produced emits 2.1 lbs** of CO 2 into the atmosphere.

Different source,          same properties
Braskem’s Green PE offers the same performance and properties as petrochemical polymers.
In 2011, Braskem’s green PE received the highest certi-fication from the Belgian company Vinçotte, the leading certifier of products with renewable content. The analysis was bad on samples from the HDPE (high density
polyethylene) and LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene) families. All grades received four-star certifications, which is the highest quality rating conferred by Vinçotte. With its investment of $290 million in the Green Ethylene plant located in Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul, Braskem is committed to the development of a market for products made from renewable sources.

Performance and Competitiveness:
Green Polyethylene has the same properties as petrochemical polyethylene
An additional advantage of Green Polyethylene is that since it shares the same performance and properties as resins made from non-renewable raw materials, plastics manufacturers usually do not have to invest in new equip-ment and can maintain the same processing conditions and productivity rates. There is also no need to change product designs, which shortens the time required to launch more sustainable materials in the market.
Braskem: the world’s leading  biopolymer producer
benjaminfranklin
Launched in July 2007, Braskem’s Green Polyethylene was the first made from 100% renewable sources.* In 2010, this project became a reality and, with the start-up of its first Green Ethylene plant, Braskem became the world’s leading biopolymer producer. Today this plant produces 440 million pounds annually of polyethylene made from sugarcane ethanol.
