Analysis of “The Indian Burying Ground:The Indian Burying Ground, written by Philip Freneau, is considered as a nature lyric. In this poem, Freneau prented a real appearance of the Indian burying ground and people’s activities around it. Quite different from o ther ornate style, a natural, simple, and concrete diction best illustrated in this poem. It rhymes in abab, which makes it more rhythmic and attractive. It also attracts us and gives us a deep impression that the Indian burying ground ud to be very important in history, was a place that related body and soul. was a place witnessing the history, was sacrosanct, and was a lumen. Like other people around the world, Like the North American Indian did before, we consider death as soul’s eternal sleep, as the poem saying
“the posture, that we give the dead, points out the soul’s eternal sleep.” Death is not the end., it “can only mean that life is spent, and not the old ideas gone”. Each person’s existence will have different evidences to prove it, whether t his or that. Once appeared in the earth, people’s
thinking, activities or even words were existed. They won’t disappear forever.The posture of “sitting” reminds the readers that even though tho people are dead, they are still alive, by providing the images: (1) “Again is ated with his friends, /And shares again the joyous fears.” (2) His bow, for action ready bent/ And arrows, with a head of stone,” (3) Beneath who far-projecting shade/ (And which the shepherd still admires)/ The children of the forest played!), etc.
