摘要：SIR, – I was taught at college and have heard it asrted a number of times that the u of the term ‘symptom’ is inappropriate in veterinary medicine. The reasoning, as I understand it, relates to the medical definition of symptom. Although the wording of the definition varies from source to source, symptom is commonly defined as ‘any indication of dia perceived by the patient’ (Weller and Wells 1990). Since animals cannot inform us of their subjective perceptions, it is suppodly incorrect to term our obrvations of them as symptoms.
