Electroplated (electrolytically deposition) fasteners
1 Purpo
This recommendation describes the general requirements for creation of Material Data Sheets (MDS) of metallic coated fasteners (e.g.screws, bolts, nuts and washers) up to grade 12.9, according to ISO 898. The material data sheets for fasteners describe the ba material and the metallic coating, including subquent treatments such as chromate conversion coating, passivation treatment, aling and lubrication.

3 Definitions
3.1 Ba material
The ba material is the steel component without any form of coating. The composition of the ba material for standard parts “Material for fasteners Property Class <= 12.9” can be found in the IMDS. This ba material is not only ud for screws, but also for bolts, nuts and washers.
The material specified on any Fastener drawing has to be the material ud for production of this part.
3.2 Metallic Coating
The standard compositions of the following electrolytically applied metallic coatings are listed in IMDS (e examples in ction 4).

3.3 Chromate Conversion Coatings or Passivation Treatments
In IMDS we have defined two categories of coatings, to simplify the arch process:
•Coatings that contain Cr(Vl) (hexavalent chromium) are described as chromate coatings. •Trivalent chromium coatings (that are Cr(VI) free) are described as passivation treatments.
Both types of coatings are listed in IMDS (e examples in ction 4).
3.4 Types of Sealants
Both inorganic and organic alants are listed in IMDS and can be referenced there (e examples in ction 4).
3.5 Lubricants
Lubricants ud to obtain constant coefficient of friction characteristics for fasteners can be referenced under the manufacturer´s specific product entries.
