As I drove to Annie’s cottage, my mind was filled with worry. A relationship that had emed promising had ended. My company was downsizing, and I didn’t know if my job was safe. I was already 少年英雄联盟overextended on my mortgage, and now my small hou needed work, which meant dipping into my ever-decreasing savings once again.
Accelerating around the bend, I could e her cottage at the end of the lane. At that moment, a shaft of sunlight hit my windscreen, and for a moment I was blinded. Narrowly missing an old stone wall, I slowed down. I need to focus, I scolded mylf, but it was difficult to stop the thoughts that were chasing around my head. I was worrying about the past and trying to predict the future, and I didn’t know which problem to focus on first. I needed advice.
Some would say that my aunt — who was well known in the village for her eccentricities — was not the best person to give advice on matters of the heart or finances. But Annie had never failed材料科学与工程就业前景 me in the past, and she had somehow managed to scratch out a living al
one on this small farm for years.
Leaving my car on her drive and walking around to the back of her cottage, I found her feeding the chickens. A frayed dress hung looly on her small frame, tied neatly at the waist with string. Hens clucked around her feet. She saw me and made her way to the gate. As she drew clor, I could e the fatigue around her eyes. I felt a surge汉翻英 of affection and admiration at how, despite her age, she managed to keep her small farm going.
Half an hour later, each of us holding mugs of tea, I filled her in on the details. Annie and I had a somewhat novel way of problem solving that involved a pack of well-thumbed playing cards from which she would “tell my fortune.” As a child, I had believed we found the future in the cards. Later, I realid it was a clever form of analysis, but we still liked to play the game.
That day, though, the cards were not much help and emed to be adding to the muddle膨胀螺栓 英文 in my head. After throwing ideas around for a while and feeling a bit despondent, I got up
to make another cup of tea. But then Annie stopped me. Quite forcefully, she put her hand over my arm and said, “How long are you going to keep worrying over the past and the future?” I had to admit for the past few days I had thought of little el. She carried on, “You cannot change the past. We cannot predict the future. The only advice I can give you is to live in the moment. If you don’t, before you know it, all tho moments will be gone, and you won’t even have the memories becau you wasted them thinking about what has happened and worrying about what could be.”
I think she realid she had spoken a little harshly as she carried on more softly, “Don’t let yesterday and tomorrow take away today.”
As I made more tea, I thought it through and had to agree that I had been spending too much time worrying over things for which, at the moment, there was no solution. Outside, it was a beautiful spring day. The beach was a mere fifteen-minute drive away. Annie’s face lit up when I suggested we take a picnic to the beach.
On the shoreline, it was slightly breezy but warm enough. Gulls swooped clo by and la
nded on the wall. The a, though quite far out, was blue and clear. Dog walkers threw sticks, and a couple of hor riders cantered along the shoreline. People smiled as they pasd, relaxed by the calm, wide-open space.
mothertongueWe walked for a while until we found a bench with a great view. Annie headed off towards a beach shop. I guesd she was going for ice cream. However, when she returned, she was carrying two oblong shapes that looked like sticks. With a cretive grin, she started to undo the packages. I laughed when I realid she had bought a couple of kites.
We took the kites onto the top of the a defences. After one or two fal starts, the breeze caught them. Before long, we could not think of anything but controlling the kites as they skipped and bounced in the sky, making us run forward or dash quickly backwards. Out of the corner of my eye, I could e people stop and smile, enjoying the view of two women in billowing clothes, running around, bumping into each other, and laughing wildly.
When we finally ran out of steam, we sat on the grass and looked up at the sky. I looked
at Annie. On her face was an expression of pure pleasure. I was glad she and I hadn’t spent the afternoon trying to find answers to my problems, but had instead enjoyed the day.
A couple of weeks later, I decided to pay Annie another visit. She had been right about telling me not to worry too much. Things had already improved. My job was once again safe, and some quotes for repairing my hou weren’t as high as I expected. So it was with excitement one evening after work that I put a little camping stove in the car and drove out to her place. It was a great evening for supper on the beach.
