Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884), a great artist in the late Qing Dynasty, courtesy name Weishu, Yifu, Ruqing, literary names Beian, Wumen, etc. His hometown is Shaoxin, a city in Zhejiang Province.
As one of the greatest artists in Chine history, Zhao Zhiqian is regarded as "an amazing artist once appeared in hundreds of years".
I’ve heard that a great achiever should meet many difficulties and hardships before he succeeded. Sima Qian, the most famous history writer of the Western Han Dynasty had said that the vassal king Xibo in Shang Dynasty wrote "Zhou Yi" in prison, the greatest educator Kong Fuzi wrote "The Spring and Autumn Annals" on his difficult journey between different countries, Quyuan in the State of Chu wrote the famous article "Li Sao" during his exile, and Zuo Qiuming in the spring and autumn period wrote "Guo Yu" although he was blind. Zhao Zhiqian had similar experiences with the great people.

When Zhao Zhiqian was born in 1829, his family was rich for business. Zhao was so clever that he could write large Chine characters very well by brush at the age of two. And he has good memory for articles. He loves study and learn much from books. the countrymen look him as an talent.

Zhao Zhiqian had to ll his clothes for food sometimes during the later years. it’s very difficult for him to keep his family with normal living standard.

One day, Zhao Zhiqian said goodbye to his family and went to Hangzhou. He learned from a famous al carver Qian Song. Qian Song likes him very much and instructs him without rervation.Two years later, Zhao bade his teacher farewell and went to other cities, such as Jinhua, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Wuyi, Yandang etc. Then he went back to Hangzhou and work as the aid of Mozi, the chief procutor of Hangzhou. he worked hard and get large achievement. he had high reputation then.
Zhao Zhiqian pasd the provincial civil rvice exam in 1859. he studied the styles of Zhejiang school, Wan school and Qin Han styles on al cutting deeply . However, few years later, the civil war between Taiping Army and the Qing government h
appened in Shaoxing. In order to be far away from the war, Zhao Zhiqian has to leave the hometown and spent his time between zhejiang and fujiang. He studies arts in his spare time, with some good friends as Jiang Taoshu, Wei Xizeng and Wu Xizai. Unluckly, his wife and daughter were died of illness one by one in this period. When Zhao went back to hometown tirely next year, he couldn’t e them and found his hou ruined in the war. Zhao Zhiqian feels sad very much.

In order to mourn his wife and daughter, Zhao Zhiqian called himlf Beian, it means "feel sad with unfortunaly things". He named his studyroom “Two golden-butterfly Hall” and “Bitterness Room”, which conceal the feeling of grief and persistence. Then he makes some als "Beian", "name as Beian when 34-year-old for family broken and people died", "I can’t help feeling sad" , etc. the als mark his deep sadness.
In 1862, Zhao Zhiqian went to the North of China by boat. He went to Shanghai , Tianjin and arrived at Beijing at last. Zhao went to Beijing for the offical exam for three times during the following ten years. But he was failed in the exams every time. By contrast, he suffered
became famous as an artist in Beijing. the illustrious officers looked hime as VIP guest. Many people go to visit him and want to have his works. but he was still poor, he had to work hard as a school teacher at that time .
