Hands up, who’s rubbish at drawing? Ha! Bet you’re not as bad as me.
Like most during lockdown, I misd being in familiar green city spaces. A quick snap on my phone never quite captured the moment. So I was excited to find “green sketching” ssions near my home. This emed a perfect Covid-safe activity, even for the untalented.

观澜英语培训 This type of art, “green sketching”, was inspired by environmental scientist Dr Ali Foxon. Ali thought that spreading the joy of sketching could be the key to making people care about nature instead of just wordy reports. She launched her movement, Boggy Doodles, in 2016.
The day we were there the forest was glorious—all gold, yellow and brown. We spent the last hour trying to capture a forest scene. Hoping not to embarrass mylf too much, I made a real effort to catch the dark and brighter areas of the trunks, their textures. I ud an erar to create the white shape of a silver tree in the distance. Mine looked more like a winter scene—I hadn’t managed to capture the autumn leaves or the branches. But when the five of us brought our work together at the end, I wasn’t too ashamed: mine was only just the worst.
I had loved this chance for a real and physical creative experience—I can’t be the only one to feel sad at the prospect of a new lockdown. Sketching calms a busy, anxious mind
and trains the brain to notice “little things” that spark joy and help strengthen us against life’s challenges. While engaging with nature may well make us keener on protecting it—in Robert Mac far lane’s words, “We will not save what we do not love and we rarely love what we cannot name or do not e” — the benefits of sketching work the other way round.

mantaWhile it may sound like something that has crawled out of your nightmares, cyborg cockroaches have arrived as friends rather than enemies. Rearchers from Japan’s RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Rearch have designed a new remote-controlled inct, equipped with a battery “backpack” that is powered by solar panels.
The cyborg cockroach, which is part inct and part machine, is intended to enter dangerous areas, monitor the environment or undertake arch and rescue missions without needing to be recharged.
Famously able to survive a nuclear war, cockroaches have been the inspiration for a num
ber of technologies in recent years. The cockroaches are still alive, but wires attached to their two “cerci” — nsory organs on the end of their stomachs—nd electrical impuls that cau the inct to move right or left. A battery is necessary for the nding and receiving of the electrical signals, which needs to be charged up.
While it’s possible to build docking stations for recharging the battery, the need to return and recharge could disrupt time-nsitive missions. The RIKEN team wanted to create a more practical version when it ran out of power. Therefore, they designed an on-board solar cell that could continuously ensure that the cockroach stays charged while it works.
However, cockroaches have a limited surface area available for all the components necessary to move its legs and keep it powered. The solution, published in npj Flexible Electronics, was to design a special “backpack” that could neatly carry both the wireless leg-control module and rechargeable lithium polymer battery.
This was attached to the top of the inct on its chest, and was 3D printed to fit perfectly to the curved surface of the Madagascar cockroach. It allowed for this electronic device t
o be stably mounted on the inct for over a month, while leaving space elwhere on the body to implant the solar panel.
