The different styles of Afro-American music
In the cour of its development, Afro-American music, with a history of over five hundred years, has been prenting to us a diversity of musical styles, such as soul music, blues, R&B, and hip-hop. Now, we will have the details one by one.
A. Soul music with hope
Soul music is a style of music that grew out of the post–World War II era of popular black music, generically called rhythm and blues or R&B music. Despite its ubiquitous origins, soul music became a lf-conscious and undiluted form of artistic expression by African Americans borrowing heavily from gospel music. The hallmarks of soul music include powerful and emotionally driven vocals, the u of an African-derived call-and-respon technique widely ud in gospel music, emphasis on backbeats, themes of equality and redemption espoud by the protagonist, a prominent u of keyboards, and expressions
of individual or group pride historically associated with African Americans. As a popular expression of black consciousness, soul music reached its height of popularity and critical acclaim in the 1960s, crossing racial lines to attract wide audiences. For many African Americans during the years, soul music functioned as a medium through which the political, social, and spiritual concerns of African Americans were aired.
The roots of the spiritual tradition in music date to the antebellum period in American history. Initially, the songs were largely the religious expressions of enslaved African American Protestant Christians, although the music was frequently performed outside the church by individuals who belief systems reflected the influence of both the Protestant and Catholic churches and who brought to the music an emotional intensity, performance styles, and other ideas that were characteristic of many traditional African religions.
This melding is the basis and background for the emergence of spirituals as a new and distinct musical form. As Benjamin Mays, longtime president of Morehou College, explained, “The creation of the spirituals was no accident. It was a creation born of neces
