the+ adj. 表示一类人
* the+adj. 若表示一类具有某种特征或特性的人时，通常表示复数意义，若用作主语，谓语要用复数。
The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

* the+adj. 若表示抽象概念，则表示单数意义，用作主语时，谓语要用单数。如：He doesn’t know the right from the wrong. 他不辨是非。

* the+adj. 有时既表示单数意义，也表示复数意义，若用作主语，谓语动词用单数还是复数需视情况而定。如：the good 指“好人”时表复数意义，指“善”时表单数意义；the accud 指一名被告时表单数意义，指多名被告时表复数意义。比较：
The accud was acquitted of the charge. 被告被宣告无罪。(指一人)
The accud were acquitted of the charge. 被告均被宣告无罪。(指多人)
at last表示“终于”，一般暗指经过一番等、麻烦或努力以后终于得到或做到。

not only…but…as well这组连接词与一样，都表示“不但…而且”，not only 与but后面的
成分必须对等。
I spoke English not only very carefully, but very clearly as well.
Mary not only found her aunt, but stayed with her two weeks as well.（连接整个谓语）1.他不但很聪明，而且很勤奋（diligent ）。
He is not only clever but diligent as well.
2.他不但吸烟，而且喝酒。
He not only smokes but drinks as well.

as well这个短语本身的汉语是“也”“又”“还”.

将简单句连在一起并组成并列句通常用到的连词有：and, but, so, yet, or, both，and, , , as well, but also.
注:
1. and 前一般不加逗号，但其他连词前则一般
要加逗号。
Jim speaks Spanish, but his wife speaks French.
I’ve got a cold, so I’m going to bed.
2. 当并列连接的成分相同时，通常不再重复。
He either speaks French or understands it.（主语相同，省略）。
Either you or I can eat the apple.（谓语相同，省略）。
3. 当either…or和neither…nor连接主语时，谓语动词与后一个主语保持一致。Neither Lisa nor I teach mathematics.
Practice: 用连词将下列句子合并。
