Incorporated within the week of varied lectures was a trip to GM Sinter South and Sinterloy, located in the nearby towns of Ivrea and Castellamonte respectively, to e how theory tran
slated into industrial practice, with tours explaining the workings of the plants. Participants also spent a day visiting the laboratories of the Allesandria campus of the Politecnico de Torino to take part in workshops arranged by Dr Marco Actis Grande and his students which provided demonstration and understanding in areas including powder compaction, microstructure, light optical microscopy, mechanical properties and magnetic properties.
“We need people to look at PM with a fresh eye and challenge assumptions,” says Dr Moon. “Real knowledge and real experience. We rely on a core to do the bulk of it,” a core which includes Brian James, who's only too keen to express his enthusiasm to the students, proclaiming that PM is “wonderful, becau you get to play at being alchemists.”

“We have 60 to 70 students a time, from all over Europe, also Russia, Ukraine the US. The only low taker-upper is Switzerland. I have no idea why.”

With reprentatives from such a diversity of companies and countries, the focus of the school is on networking, sharing ideas and stimulating discussion.

They didn't come back.” He adds that “As far as the EU is concerned, the objective is for opening eyes and understanding, and we're doing a tremendous job.
“You cannot say that PM is the best industry,” says one student. “And you cannot say that PM is rapidly growing. PM and machining are like two lines on a graph.” He gestures to s
how both lines rising, and repeatedly overtaking each other. “They are always changing.”
There's a huge future in magnets, and hardmetals. To anyone considering a career in PM would be, Dr Moon paus thoughtfully, and says “One piece of advice. Do what you're going to enjoy doing, and if someone's prepared to pay you for it, then great.”

In their fervent concurrence that the end of the summer school would be a sad loss to the industry: a ntiment echoed by Dr Moon:
“All of us have had a ball” he said. “We've really enjoyed it.”
