uftI. The influence of stereotype on Intercultural Communication
Larry samovar, a famous professor of communication, defines stereotype as people's misjudgment of the characteristics of different cultural groups in all cultures(SAMOV AR, PORTERL, RICHARDE ,2012)错误!未找到引用源。.In his opinion, stereotypes will become fixed and2010年12月六级听力
ossified into thinking patterns, thus affecting the smooth progress of intercultural communication.Another professor of communication, Stella Ting-Toomey, thinks that stereotype has the characteristics of over generalization, which is "over generalization of the identity of a certain cultural group without considering the individual characteristics of the group", which leads to the formation of a simple and one-sided cognition of the cultural group( TING-TOOMEYS, 2007:161)[2].
In most cas, stereotypes are out of prejudice against a certain group of people, become a kind of expression of a group of people do not like or even hate, and this kind of don't like and hate means stereotypes from people's "belief" category ro to the category of "attitude", namely the production of discrimination, under the drive of "attitude" will people outside its behavior. The behavioral bias are the embodiment of stereotypes. And the stereotypes are obstacles in intercultural communication.
1.1 Stereotypes in the Green Book
Racial discrimination is the main reason for the obstacles between the two protagonists.Although the white Tony in the green paper is an underprivileged working class, he still retains the arrogance and prejudice of the white racist. He refus to touch the things ud by the black people, and will cretly throw the cups ud by the black people who come to work at home into the dustbin. Through his behavior of throwing away the water cup ud by the black people, we can show that he has a deep prejudice of the black people. His aversion to black people has been shown by his behavior. This is the typical performance of "stereotype".
drainedIn the film, the black Tang's tour was all the way south. In the United States at that time, racial discri
mination became more and more rious as he went south. Until the cond half of the tour, Don was not even allowed to go to the white bathroom, try on a suit, and eat at the same table with white people.Even though Tong is a very famous pianist, it can't change the fact that he is given special treatment. This kind of racial discrimination against blacks has riously affected their lives.Form this ca we can know that this stereotype has done harm to others, and it is also an obstacle to intercultural communication.
1.2 Overcoming stereotypes in Green Book霍尔特人
Along the way, Tony witnesd Tang's embarrassment and humiliation. While helping Tang solve the problem, he gradually accepted Tang's advantages. Everything along the way is changing Tony's inherent perception of black people. From the beginning of his disgust for black people to the end of the film, Tony embraces Tang happily after he opens the door to meet him. He completely accepts Tang and changes his previous impression of black people. It is by the warmth of human nature that Tony and Donald have the courage to break
immobilethrough the boundaries of race and class, and also find themlves in the dislocation of stereotype and realistic identity.Form the ca we can know that stereotype can be overcome, but it is difficult.
Ⅱ. Caus of the Stereotype
及时翻译2.1 Racial discrimination
the black mambaRacial discrimination is an important manifestation of stereotype.Racial discrimination refers to any policy, practice, belief or attitude bad on a person's race and endowed with his or her characteristics or status. It not only means prejudice, but also refers to the exerci of power bad on their race.Racial discrimination is rooted in racial stereotypes. The writer Michael Harrington once said in 1963: "being born black will continue to be the most rious disability impod on its citizens by the United States." It can be en that black people were deeply discriminated against and violent in the American society at that time. "No matter who they are, no matter how high their social status is, how big their official positions are, and how rich their property is, black people in the United States inevitably encounter this problem more or less.
The identity of black people is the shackles that they can never get rid of, and the shackles of discrimination are deeply rooted in the stereotype of black people in American society. However, the white people enjoy the social privilege over the black people regardless of their social status. It can be en that the stereotype of the white people is related to the characteristics of the upper class.Th
e racial discrimination have riously affected the life of black people and become a major obstacle in cross-cultural communication. It is this kind of racial discrimination that leads to the communication barrier between the two protagonists. In the Green Book, the discrimination between blacks and whites is appalling.Even high-status blacks are still discriminated against by whites. In our life, there are many misunderstandings caud by racial discrimination. How to reduce racial discrimination is a difficult problem.optimal control
Ⅲ. Ways to overcome stereotypes
3.1 The way to reduce racial discrimination
In cross-cultural communication, racial discrimination is a big obstacle.Racial discrimination is one of the concrete manifestations of stereotype. This paper mainly solves the problems of racial discrimination in stereotype. In intercultural communication, the main point for people to reduce racial discrimination is to overcome ethnocentrism and participate in cross-cultural communication with an equal attitude.White people should not be superior becau of their skin color, and black people should not be insulted becau of their black skin. The most effective way to overcome ethnocentrism is to have direct contact withkatsumi
multi-cultural environment.
For college students, if they want to avoid the racial discrimination in cross-cultural communication, they must understand the people of other countries, which means learning the language and culture of the country. At least, it involves the history and geography, human customs, social conditions, living habits, literature and art, philosophy and religion of the country.Until they really understand the culture of this nation, they will correspondingly reduce the stereotype of racial discrimination
In addition, it is necessary to cultivate people's empathy in terms of emotional ability.Empathists interpret and evaluate other people's behaviors according to other people's cultural norms, which means that they can put themlves in their place and experience and obrve the world with each other's eyes.As long as people do a real transposition thinking, they can largely reduce racial discrimination. The above methods can effectively reduce racial discrimination, which is esntial in cross-cultural communication. From this ca, we can know that stereotype is a big obstacle in intercultural communication.Overcoming racial discrimination is one of the steps to improve intercultural competence. In intercultural communication, we should be good at discovering the charm of other national cultures.Every culture has its unique charm, and every nation has its superior characteristics. Therefore, in the process of communication with other countries, on the one
hand, we should absorb and learn from the characteristics and advantages that we do not have. At the same time, we should not only recognize their shortcomings and defects, but also be tolerant and understand them on the basis of not harming our own national feelings. In this way, we can constantly enrich and improve our own national culture in the process of cultural exchanges with other nationalities, so as to make them shine in the world.
