A man in Yongzhou was afraid that doing things on certain days would bring misfortune.
As he was born in the year of zi, and the rat was considered the deity of zi, he‘ especially shielded it. He not only didn't keep cats and dogs, but also wouldn't allow his rvants to kill rats. He allowed rats to run wild in his granary and kitchen and never bothered about them. Hence, the rats told one another about this and moved one after another into his hou, where they ate their fill all day long and lived in safety.
This gentleman's hou was so ruined by the rats that there was neither an intact utensil nor a whole garment on the clothes rack. Even his own food was mostly leftovers by the rats.
In the daytime, the rats walked in swarms around the master. At night, they fought for food, quarrelled and squeaked, making such a racket that no one could sleep. Yet this gentleman never felt annoyed.
Several years later, this gentleman moved away and another family moved in. Yet the rats went on brazenly with their evil deeds as before.
The new master was very angry. He said: "The shameless pests steal things and make trouble so devastatingly. How could they be tolerated?"
He immediately borrowed five to six good cats, clod the doors and windows, and let them catch the rats. He also engaged men to move bricks and tiles, fill up the holes with water so as to clo in on the rats on all sides.
Thus, the rats caught and killed were thrown to an out-of- the-way place, heaped up like a hill. It took veral months for the stench to dissipate.
Tho rats probably thought they could always eat their fill without any disaster. Actually this was lamentable. The rats should never be tolerated.
In the past, I heard people say:
"Formerly, it was often cloudy and drizzly for days on end in the south of the juncture of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Hubei, with very few fine days in between. When the sun shone occasionally, the dogs would bark consistently without stop."
I never quite believe this kind of talk, and consider it exaggerated.
Six or ven years ago, I came to the south. In the winter of the following year, there was a heavy snow rarely en before. It crosd the Naming Mountain and covered veral prefectures in the southern part of Yue (Guangdong Province). Conquently, the dogs in the prefectures were all panic-stricken. They barked wildly and ran about in confusion for veral days in succession. It wasn't until the weather had cleared and the snow melted that they became quiet.
Only by then did I believe that it was likely that the dogs in Shu (Sichuan Province) barked at the sun.
Of cour there is nothing wrong with sunri or snowing. In fact, the dogs just consider the phenomena strange out of ignorance!
In the State of Chu, there was a man who family was very poor. Even at night he often dreamt of striking it rich, but he never worked hard.
One day, when he was leafing through the book Huainan Zi, he came across a line saying: "When the mantis preys on the cicada, it relies entirely upon a leaf to conceal its body." He thought that if one could get such a leaf, one could become invisible.
Thereupon, he ran into the woods, looking for just such a leaf among the branches. He had arched a long time before he discovered a mantis hiding itlf behind a leaf and waiting to catch a cicada. He climbed up the tree at once, and plucked the leaf. But he was in such a big hurry that, out of carelessness, the leaf dropped to the ground. There were many, many fallen leaves on the ground. How could he identify the leaf he had plucked? So he had to put all the leaves into a bamboo basket and carry them home.
As soon as he got home, he held up one leaf after another in turn to cover his eye, and kept asking his wife:
  "Can you e me?"
In the beginning, his wife always answered: "Yes, T can."
After a long time, she began to feel weird: What was the matter with her husband today? Why did he keep holding up a leaf and asking her the same question?
He did this over and over again for one whole day. In the end, his wife got impatient and humoured him by saying: "No, I can't."
Hearing this, he became wild with joy. He turned and ran out to the street. Holding the leaf in one hand, he grabbed with the other hand the goods in a shop. But before he could withdraw his hand, he was caught on the spot and handed over to the local yamen.
