第3章The national English curriculum
一、Designing principles for the National English Curriculum 教学大纲的设计标准
①Aim for educating all students, and emphasize quality-oriented education.
面向全体学生,注重素质教育。
②Promote learner-centeredness, and respect individual differences.
突出学生主体,尊重个体差异。
③Develop competence-bad objectives, and allow flexibility and adaptability.
整体设计目标,体现灵活开放。
④Pay clo attention to the learning process, and advocate experiential learning and participation.
强调学习过程,倡导体验参与。
⑤Attach particular importance to formative asssment, and give special attention to the development of competence.
注重过程评价,强调能力发展。
⑥Optimize learning resources, and maximize opportunities for learning and using the language.

二、Goals and objectives of English language teaching./ Talk about the philosophy of the practicalness and practicality in the language learning during compulsory education period./ Explain the goal of “affect and attitude” in National English Curriculum.
2001 National English Curriculum for Nine-year Compulsory Education:
The main task of the English curriculum for nine-year compulsory education is to stimulat
e and cultivate students’ interest and their confidence in learning the language, help them develop good learning habits and form effective learning strategies, facilitate autonomy and cooperative spirit in learning; enable students to master basis English language knowledge and skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing so that they form sufficient competence in using the language; cultivate students’ abilities to memorize, to obrve, to think, to imagine and to create; increa their awareness of the cultural differences between the East and the West, enlarge their vision, cultivate their patriotic spirit, and help them form healthy views about life. On the basis of all of the above, we lay a good basis for their life-long learning.
三、Five aspects of overall language ability: 教学大纲要达到的5个目标、教学实施的依据
language knowledge: phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, functions, topics
language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing
cultural awareness: knowledge, understanding, awareness
learning strategies: cognitive strategy, lf-management, communicative strategy, resourcing.
Affective aspect: international perspectives, patriotism, confidence, motivation.
四、Challenges facing English language teachers:挑战大体趋势
First, they are expected to change their views about language which is not a system of linguistic knowledge but a means for communication.
Second, they are expected to change their traditional role of a knowledge transmitter to a multi-role educator. Thirdly, teachers are expected to u more task-bad activities and put the students in the center of learning. Fourthly, teachers are expected to u more formative asssment in addition to using tests.
Last but not the least, teachers are expected to u modern technology in teaching, creating more effective resources for learning and for using the language.
五、Tips for teachers to deal with changes and challenges in the process of curriculum reform: 措施
(1) Have an open mind towards different kinds of ideas and approaches to teaching;
(2) Be willing to try out new ideas and find out if they work or not. If not, why not. Be prepared to share with colleagues your difficulties or success;
(3) Try to find opportunities to attend training, minars on language teaching and obrvations of teaching. You can always learn a lot from others;
(4) U the resources available to help you with teaching and lf-learning. There are a lot of resources on the Internet nowadays for teaching and for brushing up your own English. There are also a lot of books discussing about the new curriculum.
(5) Reflect on your own teaching and beliefs about teaching. If possible, keep a teaching diary to record the questions that ari from your teaching and your own understandings about teaching. You will find the notes subconsciously focusing your attention on solvin
g problems on a day-to-day basis and you will find yourlf changing in the process of teaching and reflecting.
