A Comparative Study on English and Mongolian Proverbs
Abstract
Proverbs, the esnce of a nation’s genius, wit and spirit, which reflect a nation’s culture, religion, natural condition, custom and thinking patterns and are the fruit of knowledge and daily experiences. They are not only prevalent in folk but play a significant role in education. For example, in daily speaking and writing, it is common to u some proverbs to express our feelings and experiences more specifically. Proverbs in different languages convey different national features and show people the most unsophisticated cultural heritages. By comparing the every subtle detail of proverbs in two languages, we can find lots of similarities in two languages and differences of two nations in many aspects. In this paper, I mainly analyze the similarities and differences of English and Mongolian proverbs, and discuss the significance of the comparative study on English and Mongolian proverbs.

摘要
谚语是一个民族精神与智慧的结晶，是日常知识与经验的果实，反映了一个民族文化，历史，习俗，自然环境，思维方式等。它不仅在流传于民间，在教育中也起到了重要的作用。比如说，在日常的对话与写作中，为了更清晰地表达我们的所感所思，我们会运用各种谚语。不同语言的谚语传达着不同民族的特征，展现着各个民族最质朴的文化遗产。通过对两种语言的谚语做比较，我们会发现很多语言上的共同点和两个民族在很多方面的不同点。本文主要分析英语谚语和蒙语谚语的异同，并讨论英蒙谚语对外语教学的启示。

I. Introduction
A proverb is a short well-known saying that states a general truth and gives advice and also is a culturally significant saying with a moral or practical message. Mongolian and Englishmen recorded and reflected the culture by their own language. Under the influenc
e of different cultural background and customs, the two nations created large number of proverbs, parts of which reflected the interction and fusion of two nations and were associated with social life. English and Mongolian proverbs are the elite of their nations, which u the most correct and vivid words and the most brief and rhymed ntence pattern to show the terness of their language. As regular pattern always exist in objective world, human’s thinking always has common ground, for that there are lots of similarities between English and Mongolian proverbs. However, different history, culture, custom, politics, natural condition and economy shaped a unique culture. The differences of English and Mongolian proverbs are mainly shown in culture. Making a comparison for English and Mongolian proverbs, it is beneficial to know the similarities and differences of two kinds of culture.
