Last week, our forum(论坛)asked if you had any funny or strange stories about using English. We didn’t expect to get so many posts! Here are some of our favorites, to remind us that some of the English we learn in the classroom is rather different from the English in the outside world.
Yancy
People say that the British always play safe with what they eat. Not true! I went to a summer school in Manchester and my English teacher was called Maggie. One day, a different teacher took our class. He told us that Maggie couldn’t teach that day COZ she had a frog in her throat. Poor Maggie-but why did she try to eat such a big frog?

When I first visited New York, I went to a downtown shopping centre to buy some winter boots. At the information desk at the entrance, I asked a lady where the shoe shop was. She said that it was on the first floor. So I went up to the first floor, but I couldn’t find any shoes. I decided to leave. When I was looking for the exit, I saw that shoes were actually sold downstairs on the ground floor, not the first floor. Why did she give me the wrong information?

The British must have really high standards. I was part of a student exchange programme between a university in England and my university in China. I spent days preparing and writing my first English paper. I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment. When I got the paper back, I found my teacher had written the comment “Not bad!” Not bad? But there weren’t any errors in my paper.

【解析】
【分析】本文是记叙文,网站论坛分享了三个故事(课堂学的英语和现实生活中的英语产生的误解)。
【1题详解】
句意猜测题。根据Yancy分享的故事“People say that the British always play safe with what they eat.”可知,英国人吃东西总是很小心的。但Yancy接着说“Not true!”然后讲述自己的故事:她的英语老师Maggie没来,另一位老师替她上课,并解说原因是“she had a frog in her throat.。但是Yancy却说“Poor Maggie-but why did she try to eat such a big frog?(为什么她要吃这么大的青蛙,以至于卡在咽喉)显然她从字面意思去理解,理解错了。由此可知,划线句子的意思是:嗓子嘶哑,说不出话来。故选D项。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。Sophie的遭遇:根据“So I went up to the first floor, but I couldn’t find any shoes.”中的“went up(上)”可知,Sophiethe first floor理解为了二楼,而在美式英语中,the first floor是一楼,因此产生误解。Zheng Xu 的遭遇:“I knew I had done a good job and was looking forward to getting a positive comment.”
B
The days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Given that Neil Armstrong wanted to take a football to the Moon, we could even say that it is also the mo
st popular sport out of this world! The history of the game goes back over two thousand years to Ancient China. It was then known as cuju (kick ball), a game using a ball of animal skins with hair inside. Goals were hung in the air. Football as we know it today started in Great Britain, where the game was given new rules.
That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity. It is also a game that is very cheap to play. You don’t need expensive equipment; even the ball doesn’t have to cost much money. All over the world you can e kids playing to their hearts’ content with a ball made of plastic bags.
Another factor behind football’s global popularity is the creativity and excitement on the field. It is fun enough to attract millions of people. You do not have to be a fan to recognize the skill of professional players or to feel the excitement of a game ending with a surprising twist.
What’s more, football has become one of the best ways for people to communicate: it does not require words, but everyone understands it. It breaks down walls and brings peo
ple together on and off the field.
“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, ...” said Bill Shankly, the famous footballer and manager. “I can tell you with certainty it is much, much more important than that.” This might sound funny, but one only has to think about the Earth to realize that our planet is shaped like a football.
4. What can we know from paragraph one?
A. Some people like to play football on the Moon.
B. The game called cuju was given new rules today.
C. Cuju is different from football as we know it today.
D. Many people like playing a ball made of plastic bags.
5. According to the author, there are ________ reasons why football became so popular in the world.
A. 3    B. 4    C. 5    D. 6
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Football is round.    B. Football is more than just a sport.
C. Our planet is shaped like a football.    D. What Bill Shankly said sounds funny.
