It was a Saturday in June, 1988. Out of a 16-year-old's early summer boredom, I had t up a tent in our rural yard and intended to sleep in it, but I stayed in the hou to finish watching the Lakers' play-off game. It was almost midnight and Dad had been asleep upstairs for hours when someone knocked at the front door. It never occurred to me not to answer it.
To my surpri, it was a girl about my age with a bloody cut on her forehead. “Hi. I'm Maria. What's wrong with you?” I asked her with concern. Awkward and embarrasd, sh
e replied: “I'm Jane. I...”she hesitated and then asked me carefully, “May I stay here for the night? I'll be off tomorrow morning.” Seeing her uneasiness, I comforted her, “Take it easy, Jane. Stay with me tonight.” I invited her into the hou.
Looking around, Jane appeared to have calmed down. “Let me treat your injury first,” I said and she agreed.
I cleand and bandaged(包扎) her injured forehead and then gave her some bread and bacon to eat. “Want to sleep in my tent?” I asked her and she nodded. Having left her in the bathroom, I went to look for another sleeping bag. When I returned, Jane was ated on the sofa, her face clouded by sadness.
Walking across the dark yard, I accompanied Jane into the tent. We lay down side by side. Seized by curiosity and concern, I constantly turned over, wondering what had happened to her and how she came here. Jane emed to have nd that and started to speak.
Jane's father died of cancer years before. Her mother did odd cleaning jobs to rai her. Money was tight but her mother tried to do what she could to satisfy Jane. Several weeks before, Jane accidentally saw fancy white dress in the store window, which she fell in love with at first sight. She excitedly told her mother about that, who promid to buy it as her birthday gift. From then on, Jane was looking forward to it.

It's a shop I must have walked past a million times before, but have only noticed until now, and have never thought to enter. It's a little brown brick building with a small window display offering various forgettable items that are of no interest to me. But I have some extra time today and decide to take a quick look.
The interior (里面) of the shop is cool and dark, and it takes a moment for my eyes to ad- just. A strong ro smell hangs thickly in the air, which is nearly enough to turn me away. In spite of this, I continue further into the store, eyes scanning the shelves for anything interesting. Indeed, there are different items, and yet none appeals to me.
“Can I help you?”
I look up to e an elderly woman behind the counter. She looks a little surprid, and I wonder when she last saw a customer enter her shop.
“Just looking casually,” I reply.
I make a full circle of the place and there is indeed nothing here I wish to purcha. I wonder how the old woman manages to stay in business. I head towards the door, but pau when I notice a large old book on a wooden stand.
There is no visible title on the well-worn leather cover, and it is locked with a combination lock (密码锁). Beside the book, there is a paper with numbers on it. The numbers read: 02-11-32.
I try the lock with the combination, but it does not open. I am now even more curious to discover what lies between the book's pages. “What is this book about?” I ask the old woman, who has been staring at me quietly the whole time. “Do you know the combination?”
“I do,” the woman replies, but adds nothing more.
I am annoyed by her respon, and I've had enough of this place. I turn to leave and I am
almost out the door when I hear the woman say, “Try your birthday.”
I wander back over to the book. She's crazy, I think. With my index finger, I hit the numbers into place so that they now show my birth month, day, and year.
