At the weekend, the teacher assigned a special assignment to us to participate in activities about Chine traditional culture. Our group decided to go to Ou Shuo workshop to experience how the ancients made paper.
When we arrived at Ou Shuo workshop, a teacher in his forties came to us. He was wearing camouflage clothes and a moustache. He looked very literate. Mr. moustache asked us to surround a stone trough. The stone trough is divided into four compartments. Each compartment is filled with water of different colors. There are various kinds of pulp, mashed camphor bark, cotton of different colors, and a mixture of two materials.
Mr. moustache began to introduce the history of paper. He said, "paper is one of the four great inventions in ancient China. Cai Lun of the Eastern Han Dynasty invented papermaking. Papermaking, together with the compass, gunpowder and printing, is called the four great inventions of ancient Chine science and technology. It is the remarkable contribution of the Chine people to the development of science and culture
in the world." About how to make paper, Mr. moustache gave us a demonstration one by one to let us understand the process of making paper.
When the teacher finishes the demonstration, it's our turn to start. I couldn't wait to get to the edge of the stone trough and began to make paper after learning what the teacher had just done. I first soaked the filter screen in the water, then picked it up from bottom to top, and repeated it for veral times. In this way, the pulp is evenly spread on the filter screen. Then cover the pulp with two pieces of soft cotton cloth, put it into a machine that flattens the pulp, and then turn the handle of the machine hard until it can't be turned. The pulp discharges excess water and is flattened. Finally, I put the presd pulp carefully on the dryer to dry the water. After about ten minutes, my newly made paper came out. I held it excitedly. Although it looked a little thin and rough, it was the first piece of paper I made by mylf! It is said that in ancient times, there was no paper drying machine. It was usually dried by the sun. It took a long time. Modern technology has really provided us with great convenience.
Mr. moustache also told us that the main material for papermaking comes from trees. For every ton of paper, 17 adult trees need to be cut down. It ems that we should cherish every piece of paper, protect nature and protect our home.
