The purpo of the ignition system is to provide an electric spark to the correct cylinder at the correct time to ignite the air/fuel mixture. This provides energy, which is ud to force the piston down and turn the engine crankshaft. The spark consists of an electric arc produced by applying a high voltage across the electrod
es of a spark plug. This spark must occur near the end of the compression stroke, as the piston approaches top dead center (TDC). The cylinders must fire in the proper order and at a preci instant, depending on engine speed, load and temperature conditions.
点火系统的作用是在正确的时刻步伐的意思把电火花提供给气缸,点燃空气/燃油混合气。燃烧提供了能量,使活塞下行并带动曲轴。火花由电弧产生,是由经过火花塞电极的高电压形成的。火花应该在接近压缩行程终了的时候产生,即活塞位于接近上止点。各缸的点火应该有合适的顺序和精确的时间,这取决于发动机转速,负荷和温度。
评析:习惯上,中文的时间地点等状语都放在动词或句子的前面。此处,“正确的时间”,要求凸轮轴和曲轴有正确的传动比,所以,需要“正时齿轮”。
The ignition system is divided into two circuits: the primary and the condary. The primary circuit is the low-voltage side of the system and controls the condary circuit, which is the high-voltage side of the system.
The following are the basic parts of the primary ignition circuit:

前面的句子里, and一词连接了2个动词,分别是is和control,它们的主语都是the primary circuit。翻译句子应该要把句子的结构看清楚,免得张冠李戴。点火系统中的高、低压回路是利用了电工学电磁感应现象中互感原理制造而成,例如日常生活中使用的变压器也是利用这一原理制成。

The following are the basic parts of a condary ignition circuit:
1. Ignition coil condary winding
Has a high voltage (40000V or more) induced in it each time the primary magnetic field collaps.
2. Coil wire
Heavily insulated wire that feeds high voltage from the ignition coil to distributor cap.
3. Distributor rotor
Operates in conjunction with the distributor cap to distribute the high voltage from the ignition coil to the individual spark plug wires in the firing order.
4. Distributor cap
Insulated cap that transfers high voltage from the distributor rotor to spark plug wires.
5. Spark plug wire
Heavily insulated wire that carries high voltage from the distributor to the spark plugs.
6. Spark plug
Provides the air gap within the combustion chamber for the high voltage to arc across, thus igniting the air/fuel mixture.

评析:在这句话中,heavily修饰insulated(绝缘的),应理解为“非常,很”,而不是“重”,在翻译时只要能表达出这层意思就可以,也不一定要完全按照字面翻译,否则,不符合阅读习惯。这句话说的是,如果高压线发生漏电现象,则高压线圈产生的高压电无法完全通过分缸线送到火花塞,从而无法产生电火花。
The distributor is the most important part in the ignition system. It handles veral jobs. Its first job is to distribute the high voltage from the coil to the correct cylinder. This is done by the cap and rotor. The coil is connected to the rotor, which spins inside the cap. The rotor spins past a ries of contacts, one contact per cylinder. As the tip of the rotor pass each contact, a high-voltage pul comes from the coil. The pul arcs across the small gap between the rotor and the contact (they don't actually touch) and then continues down the spark-plug wire to the spark plug on the appropriate cylinder. When you do a tune-up, one of the things you replace on your engine is the cap and rotor -- the eventually wear out becau of the arcing. Also, the spark-plug wires eventually wear out and lo some of their electrical insulation. This can be the cau of some very mysterious engine problems.
