As an international student in the United States, I have truly felt the cultural differences between China and the United States. So far, the biggest difference to me is how people greet each other.
Now I am studying with my homestay. Every morning my homestay sister asks me, "Good morning, how are you?" The first time she said this, I replied, "Everything is good." But every morning, day after day, she asked me the same question and I ud up all the words in my mind.
吴越荣记
One day I asked my homestay family about this and learned that it is just a common greeting in the US. When Americans meet someone they need to talk to, such as a shop assistant, they often greet him or her with. "Hi, how are you? " He or she might reply,"Good, and you?" Then you may ask your question.
Then another time when I was in class, I sneezed (打喷嚏). About half of the class turned to me and said. "Bless you! "I felt strange and did not know what to do next. So I asked a classmate and he told me it is a custom in the US. You don't need to do anything when others say "Bless you! " He told me another funny thing. Once someone in the class sneezed six times continuously, so the others said "Bless you" on and on. Everybody couldn't stop laughing.
"Have a good day" and "Have a nice weekend" can always be heard in the US. I learned it's not so difficult to understand the greeting customs here. As the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
