Air shows were a Toth family tradition: For Mom Kathleen, Dad Pete and their three boys, watching the military jets soaring and swooping (俯冲) over Joint Ba McGuire-Dix-Lakehust inspired awe (惊叹).
At one show, the oldest child Peter, in middle school at the time, saw a flyer (传单) for Civil Air Patrol (CAP) – the civilian auxiliary (民间后备队) of the US Air Force. The group accepts members 12 and up, and Peter was intrigued (好奇的).

The Toths supported Peter’s Civil Air Patrol activity, driving him 45 minutes each way from their home veral times a week for everything from volunteer meetings to arch and rescue missions, encampments and physical fitness drills (操练). They watched as he became a leader in high school – excelling in the classroom, joining the National Honor Society and starting a cyber patriot club.

That air show, and Civil Air Patrol, started the Barnegat High School nior on a path to a remarkable feat (成就). Peter decided to shoot for the three military academies. Applying to one academy is a grueling process that requires numerous paperwork, physical fitness tests, multiple interviews and a Congressional recommendation. Attempting to get into three felt like a full-time job.
Eventually, he was offered admission to three US military academies: the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, the US Naval Academy in Maryland and the US Air Force Academy in Colorado. Their acceptance rates, respectively, are just 9.6 percent, 8.4 percent and 11.9 percent.
