SECTION 3.12
HARDBANDING
1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 To develop a system and provide details for approval levels of hardband product
qual ifications under Fearnley Procter Group’s NS-1™ Approval scheme.
1.1.1 The 1st option, “Level 3 Approval”, is the highest level attainable under Fearnley
Procter Group’s NS-1™ approval scheme for Hardband Products.
1.1.2 The 2nd option “Level 2 Approval” is an alternate level under the Fearnley Procter
Group’s NS-1™ approval scheme for Hardband Products.
1.1.3 Initial application of Hardband to be applied to central upt on integral HWDP.
(AISI 4145)
1.1.4 Initial application of Hardband to be applied to central upt on HWDP c/w friction
welded tool joints. (AISI 1340)
Qualification of hardband application to the centre upt of HWDP may be performed at same time as qualification to the tool joint is being performed or after tool joint qualification has been achieved. Approval will be included in any Level 2 or Level 3 certificate awarded as appropriate.
Subquent applicators of an “Approved Hardband” may be approved under this procedure. Section 3.4 Casing Wear Tests is not applicable in this instance.
2.0 SCOPE
2.1 All persons involved in the review and qualification of hardbanding products to be

included within the company’s NS-1™ Approval scheme.
3.0 QUALIFICATION PROCEDURE
3.1 Preliminary Requirements
3.1.1 Hard banding companies wishing to have their product qualified under NS-1™ are
required to submit the following in advance for review to the relevant Fearnley Procter Engineer (FPE).
WORK INSTRUCTION MANUAL
SECTION 3.12
HARDBANDING
a) Application Procedures Manual
b) WPS meeting requirements of ASME IX
3.1.2 The above documents shall include the following details as a minimum;
a) Weld preparation including diagrams with dimensions and tolerances for
both flush and raid application of the Hard banding, using fixed welding
units.
b) Welding Equipment Requirements including required amperage, voltage,
polarity, headstock rotational speeds, welding nozzle/torch positioning,
oscillation requirements, inter-pass temperature restrictions and welding
wire feeder requirements.
c) Shielding Gas Requirements.
d) Preheating Requirements and Heat Soak check.
e) General Weld Preparation Requirements for pre-cleaning of weld surface
and surrounding parent material plus the documented pre and post

welding inspection / reject criterion.
f) Pre-weld Equipment & Material Inspection.
g) As welded Rockwell Hardness range the WPS is designed to achieve
h) Acceptance Criteria
i) Verification that NS-1™ requirements are included in the procedures
3.2.0 Application of Hardbanding
3.2.1 Application of the hardband to tool joints shall be performed on two (2) sample tool
joints in accordance with the appropriate WPS
3.2.1.1 The application including t up and preheat shall be witnesd by the Fearnley
Procter Engineer (FPE). The Hard banding Company shall provide all the necessary tool joints and wire with the appropriate lot and chemistry information for traceability.
WORK INSTRUCTION MANUAL
SECTION 3.12
HARDBANDING
3.2.1.2 The choice of tool joint samples shall be reprentative of new drill pipe/ HWDP
tool joint properties. Typically a NC50 connection is ud. The sample should be at least the length of a standard box tool joint to properly allow chuck gripping in a hard band unit.
3.2.2 Application of Hardband on Centre Upt Of HWDP
3.2.2.1 Three (3) samples of the typical application on centre upts shall be produced to
the appropriate WPS. Each sample (typically 2 bands) shall be least 50 mm wide
(2 inches).
3.2.2.2 The application including pre inspection, t up and preheat shall be witnesd by

the Fearnley Procter Engineer (FPE). The Hard banding Company shall provide all the necessary tool joints and wire with the appropriate lot and chemistry information for traceability.
3.2.2.3 The choice of samples shall be reprentative of the dimensional requirements
typical of centre upts on 3-1/2” or 5” HWDP and meet the properties of the appropriate ba material.
3.2.3 Post Weld Inspection & Test
年终奖个税计算3.2.3.1 General condition of the applied hard banding will be inspected with emphasis on
weld bead profile, porosity, slag and spatter. Visual and Magnetic Particle Inspection will be carried out by the applicator, witnesd by Fearnley Procter engineer, to check for compliance. Photographs of the sample will be taken for future reference.
3.3.0 Mechanical Testing
3.3.1 Sample preparations and mechanical test of the two test pieces shall be prepared
and witnesd by the FPE as follows;

SECTION 3.12
HARDBANDING
Sample 1
i. Macro ction for Tool Joints covering the width of hardband application
minimum 76.2 mm (3 inches) shall be removed and prepared in order that
the following tests can be carried out. (Fig 1). Or
ii. Macro ction for centre upt of HWDP covering the width of hardband application minimum 50 mm (2 inches) shall be removed from 1 sample in
order that the following tests may be performed.
∙The fusion line HAZ and welded matrix shall be viewed at x 5 magnification to verify soundness of sample at Macro level.
∙The Macro shall then be subject to Hardness (Vickers) testing under each band width as follows:
o 3 hardness readings on Hardband layer
o 3 hardness readings on the HAZ
o 3 hardness readings on ba material
