Nearly all provinces need students to have an English examination when students are taking the examination which enables them to go to universities to study. English occupies a large portion of the total score of the examination so that if a student does not take English examination, he or she will definitely not get enough marks to get admitted into a good university.
But English is not a necessity to be included in the National College Entrance Examination.
First, English is not our primary language. As important as English is, it does not mean English is required for everyone to study. On the contrary, English is optional to many people who do not need to u English in their work let alone everyday life. Besides, Englis

Second, English makes many students over-burdened. Many students do not fear Chine, for it is their primary language; they do not fear Math, for it is somewhat uful and does not require one to memorize much; but they fear English, not only becau it is too foreign and distant but also it is demanding to one to recite all its words and grammar in order to have a good score when it comes to examinations. English is not a language for students to learn; it is a burden for students to bear.
And the last but not the least, the current policy have nothing but harmful effects to English learning. Under such situation, English learning has become nothing but residing this and that and passing various exams, including but not limited to, NCEE, TOEFL, GRE, and so on. Learning a language needs interest; but such a system only makes it an

obligation but not an interesting subject. You learn English by reading and speaking a lot, but studying the grammar so intensively only improves your mark. It has nothing to do with enhancing your abilities.
