During the period of English Renaissance, England enjoyed stability and prosperity. The English Renaissance encouraged the Reformation of the Church. Thus Catholicism was got rid of in England. Protestantism was established.

During this period, scholars and educators who called themlves Humanists began to emphasize the capacities of the human mind and the achievements of human culture, in contrast to the medieval emphasis on God and contempt for the things of this world.
3 periods: the first(1516~1578), the cond(1578~1625),also called Elizabethan Period, the third(1625~1660)
English literature in the Renaissance Period is usually regarded as the highlight in the history of English literature. There appeared a group of excellent dramatists, John Lyly, Tho

Thomas More (1478~1535)

.4) limitation: a) he was no revolutionary in the n of wishing to arou the people or to start any revolutionary movement among the exploited class.
b) he, living in a world bad on handicraft production, was faced with the very real problem if social productivity.
c) living in the Middle Ages, he could e what was wrong and what was needed, but he could not find the means by which socialism could be realized.
Edmund Spenr 老调重谈(1552-1599) 
Edmund Spenr is often referred to as “the poets’ poet.” due to his love of beauty and his exquisite melody ; the greatest non-dramatic poet of the Elizabethan Age.
Masterpieces:
The Faerie Queene:1) a long poem planned in 12 books, of which he finished only 6.
2)written in the form of allegory 3) a new ver form—“Spenrian Stanza”
4) story: the Faerie Queene(reprents Queen Elizabeth) holds a feast of 12 days, and on each day a stranger appears telling a woeful story of dragons and enchantress and asking Queen to nd a knight to right the wrong. Each knight reprents a virtue, as Holiness, Temperance, Chastity, Friendship, Justice and Courtesy. The evil figures stand for her enemies, as King Philip of Spain, Mary Queen of Scots or the Church of Rome.

Philip Sidney (1554-1586)

Apology for poetry is one of the earliest English literary essays. It was written to answer an attack on poetry and drama as “the school of abu”. He defended the us of poetry in this work.
According to him, poetry has superiority over philosophy and history. His views on poetry reprent the spirit of literacy criticism of the Renaissance.
Christopher Marlowe (1564~1593)
The greatest of the pioneers of English drama.
He reformed the English drama and perfected the language and ver of dramatic works. His work paved the way for the plays of the greatest English dramatist—William Shakespeare.
As the most gifted of the “university wits”, he was praid by a Cambridge contemporary as “a rare scholar and made excellent vers in Latin”. But his career was abruptly cut short by an incident. One day he was invited to dine in an inn and was killed after supper becau of a quarrel, at the age of 29.
