Humans and elephants don't always get along. In Africa and Asia, elephants damage public facilities, farmers' crops, and natural habitat critical for other species. If an elephant becomes a problem, humans may kill it. So local people are trying to find better ways to keep elephants away from nsitive places. Now, rearchers think they have a good tool to discourage elephants: honeybee.
"Elephants strongly dislike being bitten in the trunk, so it's an extremely nsitive organ. Imagine being bitten in your no by a bee, and multiply that a few thousand times." Mark Wright,
a professor of entomology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Kenyan farmers have long known that if they hang live beehives around their farms, they will drive elephants away. "The problem is how do you manage hundreds of thousands of hives, if you have a huge area to protect? And then the idea came up to look at the alarm, which are chemicals that the bees relea to launch an attack on something that's robbing the hive." Becau elephants have a highly developed n of smell, Wright and his team thought they might be able to u the bees' chemical alarm signal to affect elephant behavior.
So the rearchers tested out chemicals that imitate honeybees' alarm. In Greater Kruger National Park in South Africa, the team hung white socks treated with the mixture as well as untreated control socks around an elephant watering hole, and then obrved the animals' behavior. "Elephants are really curious organisms, they'll walk along and e something like a sock hanging
on a branch in the environment, and they'll inspect it, and if it's not treated with the alarm, they'll
pick it up, throw it around, try to taste it, things like that. And in the ca of the treated ones, we found that they would show immediate signs of unea or uncertainty, and they'd eventually back
off from them. Very ldom would they go pick them up and play with them."The study is in the journal Current Biology.
Next up, the rearchers plan to refine the mixture, in order to get an even stronger avoidance respon from elephants. That way, the remarkable animals will stay far away from wherever
脱悦they should not be going—and both elephants and humans can coexist a bit more peacefully.

US Psychotherapist(精神治疗师)Virginia Satir (1916-1988) once said: "We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth." She believed that hugging was necessary and important. Rearchers have found scientific evidence that backs up her beliefs. According to a recent study published in the journal Psychological Science, receiving a hug can reduce stress and help protect us from illness.
In the study, rearchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the US invited 404 healthy adults to participate in interviews about how often they experienced conflicts in their daily lives, as well as how many hugs they received within a period of two weeks. The participants
were intentionally expod to cold virus during the interview.
According to the rearch, people who received hugs on the same days when they experienced conflicts tended to report fewer negative feelings during the following days. They have also found that people who received hugs were less stresd out. The physical contact that
we get through hugging, especially loved ones, is a "marker of intimacy(亲密)and helps generate the 黄河主要支流
feeling that others are there to help in the face of adversity(困境)", according to Scientific American. People feel more comfortable and relaxed after hugging.
